Were these going to be in the contest? I remember the beta release, the F14 looked pretty close to completion. I know you're lurking around here somewhere... -=TheReaper=- IP: Logged |

They have remained untouched since I went through my moving ground object phase. And since you are the ONLY one to even mention them lately, I wouldn't hold your breath to see the F-14 in the contest. The lack of interest in them was a real enthusiasm killer for me. Sure I had a ball flying them, and the A-4, but since SDOE IS a WWII prop sim game for the most part it was kinda silly for me to expect a big party with them. Also since missles aren't modeled yet in the sim, and all the complex avionics stuff it's pretty silly for me to even continue. If anyone has yet to DL them though you can get them here http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop and on the right side of that page click SM files. I may or may not get the B-24 and Catalina in the game. We'll see. I have a few months of big changes ahead and have to iron out other parts of my family's lives first. IP: Logged |

I thought the F14 was a great concept. True, it didn't fit with the overall feel of SDOE, but it showed what you could do with OpenPlane and your imagination. I think all it really needed was a good two .tif texture map and some work on the cockpit. With the right resolution, it would look awesome. And, if you played with the flight model long enough, you could have a fun plane just to fly around in IP: Logged |

Think Korea and Vietnam, baby! With the exception of BVR Sparrows, I would think we could get the rockets to make a big enough bang and maybe explode on a delay or something to simulate "stupid" missiles, and in the meantime you could certainly do "gunfighters" like the F-86, Panther, F-100, Skyhawk, F-105, A-6, A-7 and on and on.You could do almost the whole 1960s without missiles, and IMO anything after that is a completely different kind of sim anyway. Ok, true. Very good points. I do have an A-4, an A-6, a Panther, a MiG-15, and even some others that can be made into a nice "early jet" sim. I'll work on the A-4 and the MiG-15 first since they already have a good start, then the A-6 and possibly the Panther will follow. The F-14 will also get finished eventually since I am pretty fond of it, its just a matter of time though. Dan, you mentioned texture maps and the right resolution. What IS the best resolution for awesome clarity (like I'm seeing on some of the new airplanes)? I seem to be the ONLY one who has some blury textures on my models. All the rest look so good. MH told me to increase the resolution, and believe me I've tried but it seems to no avail. I'm using Max to do the mappings. Any pointers? [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 03-21-2000).] IP: Logged |

Use 2 256x256 .tifs, one for the fuselage (both sides) and one for the wings (top and bottom). You can use even more if you want--the Hi-res P-38 from a few months back uses four .tifs I think. At some point you will use too much texture memory on some video cards apparently. I'd say two .tifs is easily reasonable, and three should be OK. The more .tifs you use for the skin, the bigger each airplane piece can be, and therefore the more pixels you have to work with for lettering, shading, etc. A single 256x256 on a big plane like the Tomcat would be almost impossible to "sharpen."

Well Pete, I would say study the T-bolt texture mapping. JT still has the templates that he used in max. Also, if you have flanker 2.0, study the Su27 in it. You can use repeating textures for some parts...ie, the bottom of the elevators. I would have to look at your model in max, but I would say 2 tiffs should be able to do it. You would have to chop it up, and it would be a bitch to paint, but it would look nice. The most important part to model on a modern jet would be the wing and top area. The problem with the F14 is that it is soooo big and has 2 fins, instead of one....you can repeat the inside textures, but you would need individual texture mapping for the outside, since you would be adding letters and numbers and markings. I think it could be done......you just have to sit down and study the F14 and make a decision as to what the most important part of your texture will be. It may even take three. It depends on if you want to go for looks or go for playability really. But as we did with the jug, you can always find a compromise. Dan IP: Logged |

I would have gotten enthused over the F-14, but there was no GI Joe skin for it and no Cobra Viper to go up against it .IP: Logged |

Pete... I need to add my name to the list of people interested in these aircraft. I was hoping to see a release of them to play some fun "what if" scenarios.I hope that you might come back to those projects. Greedy of me I know, but I really appreciate all you do for this game. From objects, planes, and even the original community board. IP: Logged |
