Well I think March 19, 2000 has been the biggest day ever in the histroy of SDOE. I counted 13 new planes, but i'm sure i missed some. WW2 and WW1 planes together I think we now rival Warbirds and Dawn of Aces! With the upcoming Historical night for WW2, why not have a WW1 night to go a long with it. One night of just great WW1 dogfights. With the planes Parsoft made a long with all the great user made planes i think it would be one great night. If this is something we would like to do, i think i may be will (may ) to get something like this started. Or get someone to help get it started. I'm sure there is WW1 buffs out there that would like to have something like this. Voice what you think in here to see if it would be something we could do. ------------------ Tony "Razer" Martin http://www.fshangar.com [This message has been edited by Razer (edited 03-20-2000).] [This message has been edited by Razer (edited 03-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

We really need to WWI plane pack to get the WWI night going and avoid terrible mismatches. The first WWI pack will be released on May 1st. There will be a beta release before then. The project plan and status updates will be at the OpenPlane WWI site very soon ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE!

I was playing around with all the WW1 planes.. some are too fast, some aren't. Some can handle tons of gees, some can't. Some have a max speed some don't. There's a few uber WW1 planes that would totally wipe out the others online. I'm starting to get interested in these old kites but when I fight them against each other you really notice this. TS, Stark is going to coordinate the WW I planes (suggestions for FM and DM of all WW I planes). I think Sv, Zoycite and Stark are working together on the Great WW I Plane Pack. I am sure they would welcome your help too. I know I would.Raider 33rd~GS IP: Logged |

Great News! I don't know much about WW1 but if you have any FM questions or have some stats for me to test the planes against I'd be happy to help. TS

TS (and other flilght testers): Check Zoy's site for a table of the WWI target performance characteristics researched to date. Each of the WWI ac currently underway should be listed there. That will give you some stats to begin testing against. Please, post your feedback in the WWI forum. I know we all need the feedback! Steady there big fellas!I think that obviously there are a LOT of guys who can do a pretty good job of creating a "pretty" plane, that has a lot of neat working bits. But what's more "elusive" is knowing how to play with the FMs and CGs in a "scientific method" to get the planes close to reality. I suspect there are some guys who have a pretty good routine down for this. What would be pretty useful is a tutorial of some kind along the lines of what SV has done for 3D modeling, but aimed at FM tweaking. I know I've seen some .docs covering it, but only in general terms, not as a step-by-step guide. I'm sure it's mostly trial and error no matter what you do, but I bet there's an efficient way to go about it.

There's a step by step guide in the FM Faq for getting the climb rate and speed at altitude correct. Even walks you through it for the typhoon. Truth is you have to spend as much time doing it as modelling the plane but it's a lot more boring because you have to first research then spend countless hours with a stopwatch climbing and flying level. I don't know how much more step by step I can make it heres a snippet: 1) Type the letter of the drive you want to use followed by a colon and hit enter. For example type E: and press enter to go to your E drive 2) Type DIR and press enter to see a list of files in the current folder ... 14) Type extractor typh typh 15) Type notepad typh.asc 16) Use notepad to search for the word 'CYL do not forget the quote. There will be three of these, the first two provide drag on the gear, the third represent the drag of the fuselage. When you get to the third 'CYL line, you should see: (obAirfoil (airChord 34.2658 airPt 0,-8.56644,0 airArea 176.121 )) Just for fun, try changing airArea to something like 976.121. This will cause more drag on the plane, reduce it's top speed and gliding ability. .... Q: How do I calibrate a plane for climb rate and top speed?
1) Determine the top speed of your plane at different altitudes. Determine the plane's climb rate. Determine wing area and wing span. Determine the weight of the plane including a combat load with guns and ammo but no fuel or bombs. NOTE this is DIFFERENT from empty weight. Most of this information is available on the internet or I can send it to you if I have it. 2) Take the wingspan and multiply it by itself. Divide the result by the wing area of the plane. This will give you the Aspect Ratio of the wing. .... [This message has been edited by Tailslide (edited 03-20-2000).] IP: Logged |

D'oh! I even have that one in my list of help files...and I even used it some.Just forgot about it. I was kinda thinking about what you do AFTER you get the top speed and climb rate close tho. What if your plane turns too well, or not well enough? How do you change the spin characteristics (or give it some if it won't)? If it's too squirrelly on takeoff and landing, what can you try? Sorta "graduate level" OP flight modeling... ------------------ --jedi-- IP: Logged |

Try arranging the CG boxes on your plane using the "CG" mode of opstudio.IP: Logged |

Also this item in the FAQ is important:Q: How do I see the CG boxes for the engine in OPStudio? A: Edit the properties for the engine and remove the (obhidden) property. Save and reload the plane. When you are done modifying the CG box for the engine add the property back in and save. Make sure your engine CG box does not overlap any other CG boxes (the original planes had a problem with this)

Yes WWI nights would be very cool!Tail, perhaps if your offering you could correspond with Stark. That would be very good. As one whos gets flamed by you daily, I atest that you know Airplanes We can talk more about this if you'd like. ------------------ Zoycite 33rd~GS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged |
