....Feb 19, 1942... The Australian Ministry of Defence announced today that in a desperate effort to stop the Japanese attacks on Darwin, it had formaly requested front line fighter aircraft from the Unites States of America.

It is believed that the United States has diverted a quantity of P40 Kittyhawks to assist Australia in stopping the Japanese advance.

Australia awaits .... will the USA (errr Spanky ???) come through with its commitment or will our gallant Boomerang pilots be slaughted by the Empire !

Only time will tell.

Cheers,

Spanky here..

Got ya man. Lets just say i ran into some major problems. I was basing all my assumptions on what i new about Ac3d.

Well Ac3d crapped out on me. When i changed my Open Gl drivers to play some Soldier of Fortune. I could never get them back again. So i turned to 3d studio max. THen i had problems with that. Plus all the stuff on Sv's great site wasn't as usefull for max.

So i'm learning max.

IN NO WAY IS THE P40 CANCELED.

I just have to learn more. Zoy is starting some Max tutorials since he just started using it. I plan on learning and helping him as this is REALLY needed. Plus the people who where in the contest should have more time to help us Max newbies out.

So I will still do it and i will do it well.

I hope to have a beta out a little after i learn more about using max and lofting.

It will be untextured but it will be a P40.
hehe
very alpha. My biggest block is learning all i knew in Ac3d but in max.

They use different terms so it gets wacky.

Just to tide you over for a while.

I plan on linking the cowl flaps to the throttle just for fun. Moving canopy, Great gear, Great sounds, Kick ass cockpit, Damage lods like the ww1 openplane demo plane(can't rememeber its name) The engine damage stuff that people are doing with rads and such. And any thing else i can pile in there. Some one will have to do the skin cause i just won't be able to pull that off. I will be making it FPS freindly in anyway i can. Maybe with a second cockpit.

Another project already on my mind
Check out that prop and exaust.

Yeah no prob man. Glad to see another fan of the P40

I guess I wouldnt' mind seeing if anyone wants to help out.

If you have anything your good at man let me know. Maybe writeing history or breifings or sounds or anything. Even if it isn't exactly openplane. I plan on releasing a huge History of the P40 and pics along with it.

Spanky,

I'm still struggling with texture mapping, but once a 'template' is done I can pump out what ever skins ya want.

Errr research ... man I wish I had a scanner !! Just let me know what ya after. I have a few cool books (mostly about Aust P40's - duh ), some friends that are into warbird recovery (we have a P40 recovery project going on ) AND I live in Canberra (the Aust War Memorial has one of the most comprehensive research facilities around)

Mate, just let me know. If I can help I will. This aircraft (along with the grunts) stopped the Japs at Milne Bay in '42. This was the first ground defeat against them in WW2.

A quote from Australian official records on the Battle of Milne Bay "....Although Australian ground forces were contesting every yard, the enemy was soon so close, the Kittyhawks guns were firing before their undercarriages had retracted....."

And for those with a service background - that's like ordering an Artillery Regiment to 'fix bayonets' ....think about it....

This aircraft is very important.

Cheers,

Hiya guys,

I'm a huuuuge fan of the P-40 too. Please tell me you're going to do the N version, cause the Dutch only flew the N version in New-Giunea. Here's a nice picture of a Dutch P-40N...

Man, I'm dying for a P-40...

Cya!

Oh yeah

AGAS - 5 Can you get any pics of that P40?
cockpit and canopy and underside(gear and bomb rack and such.

Most picks dont have that.

Even if the cockpit is just a shell pics from inside and out side the cockpit would rock.

Ash_EAF322 glad to see another fan of such a fine plane.

Why don't you use qryEngineTemp (probably not the right syntax for that command) to adjust the cowl flaps? It would work if qryEngineTemp did..

I'll scan my pictures for P-40 stuff, as well.

Spanky here...

Its a thought, I was thinking that way. Just not sure if it would work. Only gotta try though. I though engine heat wasn't modeled though.

If it was and it could control a DOF then maybe it could control Engine damage too. Which would rock. I would have assumed the gods would have thought of that and used.

I'll still look at it.

Thanks for any pics or stats. I've collected ALOT of stuff on it. Thinking of at least doing a web site to go with the plane.

Spanky--

I don't know if you already have the engine sounds or not...but if you don't and you or someone you know has good sound equipment- a great source for them would be the movie "Flying Tigers" with the Duke! There are many instances where I heard clear start-ups, runs, and I think even stops...plus some great .50 caliber scenes...it is truly a great flick.

Spanky,

I have pics of cockpit(1), undercarriage, droptanks & bombs (different mounting setups).

I'll track down a scanner at Uni over next few days and despatch them to ya (eerr....for research purposes ....copyright shite and all that).

RAAF had the E/K/M/N models. My preference would be for the E (the one at Milne Bay), but, its your artwork so you do whatever gives you the most pleasure.

Cheers,
