I know this is in the wrong place but....

Well I can get lods from OPS into AC3D, but when I try and imort a ".lod" file into OPS it doesn't work : - (

I was told that you need to export from AC3D as an ".obj" but how when I can't find an export function for this? I can release a new variation of the mossie when I can import into OPS.

Help.

(P.s:pleae tell me how to do it here not via a link if you can : - )

Thx

Blobby

I don't import/exports LODS directly from OPS, I use Hippies Builder/Extractor - but:

I think you need to export as a .lod from AC3D. Then you can import as LOD in OPS. Make sure you have a LOD selected in OPS that you want to replace with the new LOD.

Yes it is indeed possible to import lods into OPS directly. Just extract the lods from your sm file, and open the sm in OPS. You must have the lod import in OPS to do this. It will give you error messages the first time, but just ignore them. Then you can tweak the lods in AC3d and export them, then import into OPS to check your work.
I found the OPS lod import very useful in rebuilding my plane, which had the incorrigible DOF syndrome. BUT! You must DELETE the Lod before importing a new one. Importing a new one over an existing one gave me a protection error. Hope this helps.

Right, I just exported a LOd from AC3D. File is Moss.Lod. I now open OPS and selct the mossie .SM. I now select the iner wing and then import .LOD. There is nothing there in the directory i chose! Even if it does come up (it did once) when I try and load it a screen with "selct object" comes up, but with no objects to select!

What shall I do? Or what am I doing wrong?

Two things that you need to import .lod files into OPS:

1) A lod
2) The OPS LOD import plugin from BR's site.

How to use them after you install them:

1) Select the part that you want to replace.
2) Go to where you import lods and click on it (hey, I'm on my wife's computer!)
3) A file list window will pop up, go to the bottom of it and click on the little arrow thingie and choose 'LOD'
4) Your directory will appear empty at this state, so in the File: box type *.lod and press Enter.
5) Magically, the list of all the .lod files will appear
6) Select the file you want to import, answer Ok/Press Enter to everything.
7) Click on that button at the top of the screen with the arrows in a circle. This will tell you that it will save the current object in order to just reload it. It is ok, so tell it Ya' you betcha.
8) The file will reload and your new part should be there.

Note: The current version of the .lod import will import .lod files as black, if shininess is set to 0. Also if shininess is set to 10, and there is no texture defined for 10, OPS will die horribly, and that .sm file can only be fixed by hand.

MrBlob,

Using Hippie's tools to get LODS in and out is easy. I see you all ready now how to get a SM extracted into the ASC and LOD files. Now look at the htm file in there. This will tel you what parts have what LOD number. Like for example, my Fokker DVIII fuselage came out to be FokkerDVIII004.lod, FokkerDVIII005.lod, and FokkerDVIII006.lod.
In this case the 004 was the highest detail LOD, and the 006 was the lowest detail LOD.

Now import a LOD, say 004, into AC3D. Edit it there, or just create a fresh new mesh from scratch. Now export the new object as LOD. Name it like FokkerDVIII004.lod in this case. This will over-write the old LOD file.

Now use builder to re-build your aircraft. You now have the new LOD! You can bring up OPS and see it/position it if need be.

still not working!

How do you get extraqctor to work cus my copy doesn't do anything at all just loads a window and closes it again. I only have the .Sm files cus someone sent me them!

i can extract the lods : - (

If I draw a lod from scatch in AC3D It still wont let me inport it....

Any other ideas...Thanx so far I have really learned alot from what you have all been saying..

open up a command prompt window
type
path c:\hippies
replace hippies with the name of the dir where your extractor and builder are
go to the directory with your sm file
type extractor smName smname
where smName is the name before the .sm of the sm file
look in the html file for the part you want to replace, find its lod number
export your part in ac3d to that lod number
f4f4001.lod for instance

ooopps...sorry....I wanted General...must have walked into Tech Talk by mistake.

Go right ahead...pay no attention to me....I know how annoying it can be to be interupted by someone who breaks into a conversation.

Again, I apologize. Just direct me to General and I'll be on my way. Thanks.
