Sunday 19th 8:30pm GMT on "uk1" using the Beta 1.5.1 (Build 65)...Time for another experiment that will need some "self-control" on everyones part. We aim to have a "padlock-free" evening! This will be impossible to monitor of course, but I am relying on pilots to use their sense of fair-play to make the evening an enjoyable experience. I am the first to admit to being a padlock junkie and I may crack after a short while but I am willing to give this a go and I hope you will join in the experiment. The aim is to fly some realistic (as we can get) missions relying on our MkI eyeballs and our wingmen (using Roger Wilko) - i.e. NO enemy on map (hence 1.5.1), no HUD and clouds ON. So am I to understand we now equate using the keys, or as some guys do, the mouse to look around is now more realistic than the padlock? I know SDOE's padlock is flawed, but please. So as I am flying my mission in WWII I quickly and smoothly scan the skies by hitting my 8, 6, 3, 1, 4 key? Sounds right. I think I read that Chuck Yeager did that. Ugh. I always hate to miss these Sundays, but I will have to draw my own little line in the sand right here. Have a good time though. I'm sure alot of guys will have a blast. The Sunday flying for me was really something I looked forward to. I will hate to miss this one. I'm sure the turnout will be great though. Hey! Maybe next week, in the never ending search for more realism, we can have everyone piss down a tube instead of taking bathroom breaks! Joke, it's a joke. PR=FC= IP: Logged |

I'll be there!Oh Yeah BTW...... Yeager had an Auto-Tracking System in his head to Spot All enemy aircraft for him Instantly. Joke, Big Joke..... Rattler IP: Logged |

LOL! I just tried this offline. I gotta say, I agree with PR. While the padlock is to say the least, forgiving, trying to find and track bandits with only the keys (the hats are WAY slow) is outrageously prohibitive and very unrealistic. The biggest problem I have with padlock is- as many have pointed out, the ability to just cycle enemies. Man, if we could fix the padlock so we had some options, that would be sooooooo sweeeet!!!! Esox=FC= IP: Logged |

Finding pilots with snap head motions, although about 1/2 a second too fast compared to real life,is very realistic.Tracking them with snaps views is subject to debate,IMO. While a snap is similar to quick head movements, looking around in that view on your monitor is similar to moving your eyes around. Padlock may be better for tracking. But,TOO much of a compromise for Finding. As,you found out........... If HUD is OFF along with enemies on the map OFF and half the folks are using snap whilst the other half are padlocking, then the Padlockers have a HUGE UNFAIR Advantage. Rattler IP: Logged |

Rattler, is it anymore of an unfair advantage than a hardcore experienced simmer flying against a casual or new simmer? One of the reasons I don't fly online is the arrogance of the hardcore crowd. You cry about the lack of a level playing field because someone needs padlock, or HUD, or Target ID, or even unlimited ammo just to survive for a few minutes..but you have no reservation in handing a less skilled pilot their ass after 30 seconds of flight. Believe it or not, some people fly just for fun. And if we need a "crutch" to have that fun, so be it. If flying "realistically" keeps us from having fun then it's the realism that must go, not the fun. Maybe if we had a "casual flyers only" server where anything goes and a "hardcore" server for the elitists we wouldn't have to keep having these discussion and more people would be willing to fly online. Primarily this is going to be an experiment. It is a nice opportunity for everyone to try a non-padlock game online. I have tried several mission offline with varying results. On one mission I flew around for twenty minutes and saw bugger all... but that is much more realistic that looking at a known enemy halfway across the channel.I think one crucial ingredient that we forget is how much more voice comms like RW will make to a non-padlock game. One other possible advantage I can see a non-padlock game will make you fly more realistically - i.e not 100% throttle - you need to slow up a bit, trim out and have a good look about. I use a trackball for looking around - much better than the slow panning keys. Let's experiment and then say how crap it was afterwards ------------------ Jagdverband 44

If I knew everyone else was doing the same I would much rather fly online with no padlock. Yes, it's more difficult than it was for the real pilots who scanned with their head moving, but if everyone's doing so it simply becomes a shared challenge. It's all down to 'kill-satisfaction' I think; the harder the kill is, the more demanding of our skill and concentration to achieve it, the more satisfying it feels. Easy sucks. IP: Logged |

JerryIts very simple actually. Plenty of games are played with HUD ON.There always will be,and most of the time I like flying with TAGS,HUD,ect........ But,once in awhile, I'd like to have a FAIR ... find the target YOURSELF experience. A simple checkbox.I'm not asking to change padlock,do away with it,ect........ Read what I'm saying. Online games can be hosted by anyone, with many varibles set.If a game was up with PADLOCK OFF, simply don't join it and CREATE your own with it on. Rattler IP: Logged |

I have to go with PR and Jerry here, I do agree that the padlock needs to be changed, but our "eyes" in the sim are not realistic. They do not provide the same capabilities of even the most mediocore eyesight. Also, (Just for you Rattler) I don't think I have ever snapped my head around while driving or flying.... ever. My neck is an analog device and so scroll's around my field of view.... Padlock mimic's this. I wish everyone luck this sunday with the no padlock day.... I hope it turns out well.. I cannot join since noone seems to know if there is a way to edit the JoystickPOV in the keyboard.inp file, so I cannot change the up command to 45 instead of 90. Good luck boys... ;} Have fun... ;} Mirthain=FC=IP: Logged | |
