Topic: Suggestion for the SDOE Community

I’ve been reading through the different boards and flying some of the third party aircraft and thought I’d offer a suggestion that may help you guys online.I noticed sometimes people would try to fly with outdated files and once they got on the server would error out of a game and wouldn’t be able to fly online. I was thinking one off the talented code slingers out there could create a pre-processor for SDOE. What this would do is check your files against a known standard before you log on to a server to ensure you had the current online standard. The thinking is it might be better to know you need to update before you try to hook up online, not when you drop into the cockpit. What the program would do is download file data (crc’s?) from a central location. Say this site? It would then compare the crc data to the files on your system and let you know which files do not match. If all the file crc’s matched, you’d know you’re ready to fly online. The reason I suggest putting the file data in a central location that users would download is so it could be updated. Say there was a new planepak or a new version of the exe. You would update the file data with the new crc’s. That way everyone would know there was a new online standard and the odds of having outdated files would be reduced. Just a suggestion.

Yep.. I tried floating this idea awhile back (even have it automatically download the updates) but there wasn't much interest. TS IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. I think just a simple program that compared your setup to the current online setup would be great. anyone have the know how and time though?

I'm not sure that I could help here. I am a programer by profession but use a not so well known language. I have had two semesters of C++ and earned A's in both classes. This only means that I have an aptitude to learn. With a little direction this does not sound like to difficult of task. I am concerned that there will be some proprietary issues. I would like to help out though. I've been feeling like a kid with his hand in the cookie jar! First I paid very little for the game. Then I download the plane packs. Now I even get the Nations for just a little time downloading. If someone would like to point me in the right direction maybe we could implement an executible program that would present a message that would give the user the option to bring their software to the current version or at least warn them that they cannot join in unless they are brought up to speed. There could also be a check in for special events like a WWI mission or a historical mission. If possible, a flag could be set to disable the HUD. If there is an interest here, I'll see what can be done. Thanks for all the work that is put into this game. weasel - on your 6 ...IP: Logged |

I remember I had contact with someone who also suggested it.The idea was to let Ground Crew do the job. I was looking into CRC, but then my job requested way too much time. Since I'm working on a new version I'll look into CRC and keep you updated on my decision to do it or not..... BTW: Do I only have to check the PAR files or are there any other files (still) important? IP: Logged |

I think a CRC check is well possible. For now I'll leave it with PAR files only.My idea is this: When a developper makes a new add-on / par-file he makes a CRC check of it, enters the release date and name of his set and the download location. He uploads it to ONE central site (FS Hangar?). The owner of this site (or me if we decide people send the CRC checks to me) imports the CRC-check sent by the developper in to a small CRC database and put's it on-line (every week or so). The user can download this file and import it into Ground Crew. GC checks the current files with the latest version in the 'big' database. What do you guys think of it. Anyone interested in maintaining the version information of all add-ons? C-ya! Serval IP: Logged |

Serval.. I can point you to some active X controls that would let you pull the list from someone's website.. you'd just need the web admin to keep the page up to date and it could load it in whenever you do your check. (I was the on talking to you about CRC's before.. rehi !) TS IP: Logged |

Heya,I was thinking (as Tail would say Ruh Roh) Whould not having people download another app add to the problem? Not everyone here uses GC. Imo this is what should be done. First the best place to have this done is when you enter the lobby online. It should be part of the server stuff. If that cant be done, then I think that all files need to be located at fightersquadron.com. Then atleast everytime you visited, the check could run, and maybe a pop-up could appear stating that you need to update. "whould you like to update now?" kind of thing. If anything, it would give us all one link to send newbies too to get set up. Also better testing of future PP installs would be great. If you folow the current instructions of the PP patch, it puts the files in the wrong place. For someone new to SDOE this could be a trying experience. Maybe all future Packs, should be done as a self installing exe. One click and your done. And again, for the mean time pointing newbies here: www.fightersquadron.com/warpaint/standard.htm would be a big help. This page has all the links and instructions to get SDOE online up and running.

That's the problem Zoy, SDoE doesn't run from a server. A dedicated server would open many great possibilities for this sim...join games in progress, allow pilots to choose any a/c, rather than being forced to take what's offered in a mission, compatibility checking etc. If we in the UK had un-metered access and ASDL I would offer to run a server. Us Brits could donate for a UK one and you Yanks could do one for the USA. In fact you Yanks could do it now, with SOME HELP FROM MH!!! ( ) Hey, what a great idea! I WANT A MEDAL FOR IT!!! Twin-processor server and we'd be laughing. A Yank with un-metered access on a seperate home line, cable or ASDL connection and the ability to install and support the hardware. I'd donate for that. Siggi,We sure could have a server here in the US if a certain group of great programers would help out I dont know about others here in the States, but say I could do this, my provider wont lwt me run a server on my current set up. I'd have to get a full on bussiness line. That gets pretty spendy and it cost monthly. Great ideas Siggi, now if we could only re-arm our planes ------------------ Zoycite 33rd~GS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged |
