or a pointer...I need to get the voting pages set up for the contest and my time for that has dwindled to less than zero. Is there anyone out there who has, or could set up a fairly simple voting CGI (which would at least make an attempt at filtering out duplicates)? IP: Logged |

Michael, let me know what needs to be included, and I could put up a quick and dirty app. It seems pretty straight forward- two categories, so each person votes once in each category? I wonder if we should take the master list of people registered on this forum and compare votes against that? I guess some might be registered twice already and could therefore vote twice. Any other ideas on how to limit the voting?[This message has been edited by esox (edited 03-16-2000).] IP: Logged |

Can you use any of the free voting programs from this site? http://cgi.resourceindex.com/Programs_and_Scripts/Perl/Survey_and_Voting/ IP: Logged |

Could anyone also find a way to prevent people on dialup from getting more than one vote? Most votes on the internet ban people with static IP's from voting more than once, but people on dialup who always have a different IP have the advantage.IP: Logged |

Can't you just setup a forum here where people can post but not read? Everyone can post their vote and it would avoid ballot stuffing. TS

If no one else can do this, I am willing to put it up. It would be a MS SQL based ASP app. If we require email address, this can help eliminate dupes. I have run large contest at schoolmusic.com for teachers... what a bunch of cheats! One of the winners entered in like 50 times LOL, with made up bogus info and hotmail addresses. In this case you may want to track a combo of IP address, name, and email address. By sorting the data in various ways, the dupe entreys become pretty obviouse Also categories could function however you want. This could be made with one day notice so long as you know exactly what you want it to do. Also it could display the results in real time however you want.

Tail: Great Idea. That's the simplest proposal I've seen. I'll set up a voting forum with three threads (one for each category) which each contain the planes eligible for the category. You'll be able to cast your votes (and see who's voted for what) by replying to the thread and saying what plane you're voting for. IP: Logged |

So this is not a "secret ballot" vote? Now we bring some politics into this, eh? Sounds like more fun to me! ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE!

Are we going to let "outsiders" vote, or just the active FS community? Because we could set it up so you submit your forum name and vote. Then the votes can be filtered by the forum registry.------------------ Cheers! Jaguar The FS Hangar IP: Logged |

Since it seems like it would be such a hassle to deal with multiple identities on an ongoing basis, I suggest no "Cadet" can vote?IP: Logged |

Can't you just set it up to where you email your vote in? I thought one of the ideas behind this gig was to generate interest in FighterSquadron/OpenPlane. Just send a bunch of releases to all the major sim sights...simhq,combatsim,scharmerfighter, avsim,...etc. And just have them put a link in the 'news' release where people can just email their vote. Put another simple link up to the contest page...have all the aircraft sitting there with a number beside it..001, 002,003,etc..Tell people to come here, download the aircraft, and then send their vote it. I believe in anonymity, but a lot of people have busted their asses on these planes and I think we owe it to them and ourselves to make sure everyone knows about it. IP: Logged |

Was not the main drive for this contest, aside from giving us something to win , to get others from outside the SDOE community interested in SDOE and OpenPlane? For this reason alone, I stand before you and say this. One addy, one vote! Its a shame that we should even have to think about people ballot stuffing. I feel that limiting the voting to this forum only would be a great dis-service to our devoted group of OpenPlaners. As in the words of the good gentlemen DanW, "Alot of people have busted their asses on these planes and I think we owe it to them and ourselves to make sure everyone knows about it." I couldnt agree more! Also limiting the vote to this forum only may drive people who are not members of this forum but have been following the contest, away from any further interest in SDOE. Hey Roadtoad, I can see where you are comin from by proposing that no cadet can vote, it would cut down on the multiple registering of people , but I'm still a cadet and if I like somebody's project that they have put a heap of effort into why cant I vote for it as a way of thanking them for what they've done for us all? Anyway how do you get to the lofty heights of "Pilot"? IP: Logged |
