NB: This is not a flame about anyone in particular…The problem with screaming demons as I see it is that it was never designed to be an on-line game (realy), and yet we all treat it as if it were. The reason I say this is because the missions on-line are still computer controlled, you are limited to that game, for a game to run someone has to host and so on. For screaming demons to become a true on-line game we need to edit the coding or something. We can all take a leaf out of the most popular flight sims on-line such as Warbirds. To achieve the ultimate on-line sim you would need to combine both Fighter squadron and Warbirds. This would give you: -On-line score tables with a top ten pilots/bombers -The ability for any player to join at any point during a game by simply selecting a plane/side and joining the game in hand. -A constant combat arena/historical arena where there is no mission just dog fighting and bombing and training. -Regular set missions/campaigns with winners and objectives. -The ability to have head to head games via modem Adding these factors would make it a true on-line flight simulator. (Plus more I have missed!) Other factors which reduce the over all quality of the fighter squadron game:
-There is no score awarded just for wining a mission and staying alive! This is not right shorly? -The terrain is a big problem in causing bad FPS. Why can’t we change the terrain so that is a Computer generated terrain not just one big .SM file? This would make the game fast and furious. What the users have done for this game is amazing! New planes and so on…so how about thinking about these points so that we may go further still? MrBlob

Actually Mr Blob, This is a game based on small unit mission based flying. Not on the online mentality of putting up as many planes at one time as possible. I see that warbirds is actually going to have some squad nights and squad based combat soon. This is more like what we do. Main difference here is envinroment. In the big online games, there are no missions, unless a bunch of guys get together and do something impromptu. Here, we set up a mission to fly and try and complete the mission. I have flown in some of the online sim's, and I really don't like the layout to be honest. I find it rather chaotic, and really comes down to Deathmatch with airplanes. I much prefer the mission oriented method of playing here. When playing a mission you have a set of goals that you are supposed to be achieving, it gives purpose to the flight. I prefer that. I do agree that the scoring should be altered to reflect what you did on the flight, and a couple of bugs in regards to ground objects fixed would be very helpful for that. Many other games do use the mission base instead of constant flying. They aren't flight sims, but they do have a huge following in the online world. We are just aimed in a different direction in this sim then they are. ;} Mirthain=FC=IP: Logged |

also, although I've not tried it, there is an option to connect online via Ip adress.. MH can put me right if I'm wrong, but I see no reason why this couldn't be used to connect 2 PCs together for 1 on 1.As I said though, I could be wrong on this point, but then, why have the option if we can't use it? Modem-to-modem is discussed in the Handy Dandy Doc http://www.fshangar.com/area51/ . Basically, you set up a DUN connection between the two computers using Windows. Then in SDOE use IPX or TCP/IP Lan to find each other. There's a How-To over on http://www.winfiles.com/ explaining how to set up the DUN connection.IP: Logged |

I really enjoy the way Aces High is setup online, where taking airfields and some other installations is the ongoing objective. Missions have a nice way of working themselves out if youre flying with your squadron/friends. I would like such a thing in sdoe but the maps would have to be larger. At least 200x200miles.IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Personally i love the mission based online flights of SDOE. I have no need for hundreds of people online. I guess it would be cool to recreate the huge bombing runs. But only if the graphics didn't suffer. Also i don't really care if there is a score board. I have no online ego to support i guess. I would at least like to see bombing scores and a score added for actually landing at home base. But not a running tab from game to game.

Ditto.. I've seen online scoring ruin online games because everyone's worried about their "stats" instead of helping out their team mates. TS IP: Logged |

I'd agree with Tail & Spanky 100% on this one. And,I've paid Old Air Warrior Dos via Genie way back when over $6/hour and Warbirds 3/hour for way,way too many years. And just for people to BUY their scores/ego's, all gang up on one country, and fly the fantasy arena. My AeroSquadron was the first one to move into the Warbirds Historical Arena out of the fantasy Main, and not enough people supported the Historical. And they all costantly bitched about the range of Icon (ID tag)settings, planeset, ect and had no real control over it. Here, WE can set up missions WE like. With our Own planes, and settings(we could use a few more And meet folks at agreed upon times to fly under the conditions we prefer. I'm very glad I made the switch. Rattler

The warbirds model has advantages, and disadvantages. The big advantage of SDOE is the ability to set up more interesting missions than are typically the case in Warbirds (although I would like to see moving and interacting ground vehicles like Janes WW2F).The free-for-all nature of Warbirds is good for dipping into and out of - there is always a game going on, but it can get a bit tired at times going for another field capture. Both suffer from small maps, though, which means that bombers are at a disadvantage if modelled correctly with respect to climb rates unless air starts are available (This is where I disagree with someone who responded to me on another thread - if climb rates are small compared to a small map, air start the bombers but keep the FMs accurate).

Bitch, moan, bitch, moan, Look, the game is what it is. Its a great game but with dated code. In this day of computers doubleing speed every 18 months or so, how do you expect a year old simm that has been patched like 2nd generation retread to keep up. I am glad that I have the game, and its fun. The game bears no resemblence to its "out of the box" form. As I said before, it is what it is. You are not going to make a diamond out of this lump of coal. I think one of the best points and one of the worst points are the constant updates and add-ons depending on who you are. Shit, this game has enough patches to make a quilt. As far as FPS goes, stop trying to run the Indy 500 in your 62' Ford Falcon. This game is a cruncher. I believe I saw someone talking about a major computer upgrade (1gig cpu) to deal with the issue. If you are willing to dedicate that kinda cash, its the only way to solve the problem. Now hear this!! They are not going reprogram a year old sim to help your FPS. That is up to you!Prop out! IP: Logged |

Spanky here... Propwash computers might double every 18 months but that doesn't mean people upgrade every 18 months. Many poeple goes YEARS with out an upgrade at all. I'm still using a p2 266 with a banshee. That has to be at least 3 year old technology. As long as your decent with computers and know the layout of the folders the game uses the updates arn't a problem at all. At least not for me. Most of the mismatches are from new users who don't quite get the whole parfile VS folders right away. Once you understand that its not so bad. And about reprogramming a sim to run better on your computer. Its called optomization. And it happens all the time. As a matter of fact MH has already done it and has said i will be rolled back into SDOE's next patch. IP: Logged |

Try, try, not to piss me off. I am not smaking the simm. If you will read I stated that I enjoy the game. I mearly said that depending on who you are the patches could be frustrating.Don't take a swing at me unless you brought your lunch! Prop out IP: Logged |
