Spanky

I appreciate all the work you've done for the Historical Night of the Week.

But,I have a geniune concern with taking the HUD OFF. Its came to light in other disussions on this board, that the concept of switching HUD OFF is fully compromised by the Padlock Viewing System.

Its no secret that Clouds ON and HUD OFF is fully intended to add Historical/Realism flavor to the dogfight by concealing all aircraft to Positive Spotting/Id'ing,thru a host of obstacles such Clouds, blindspots of your airframe and Situational Awareness.

Padlock in its current state fully compromises this desired atmosphere of HUD OFF and Clouds ON.

So,until we can get a check box for Padlock OFF for the hosting options, we might as well leave it on in order to promote balanced and fair play.

Thanks for reading

It would seem to me that HUD off unfairly impacts certain planes like the Zero and 190, where you can't have a good gunsight view and a good instrument view at the same time.

In practice, pretty much any aircraft forces you to choose between looking through the windscreen or looking at the instruments. Since the artwork only reflects this phenomenon for certain aircraft, it seems to me that it's only fair to leave the HUD enabled.

Can the icons, or "targetstate" or "ID" or whatever it's called, be turned off? I think it's pretty hard to keep track of a target without that little box thingie

Spanky here..

I definatly know what you mean. I personally use HUD all the time. Knowing what a touchy issue this HUD thing is. I'm really not going to touch this.

I really have to let the poll speak for itself.

I will post another one asking the same question.

If anyone wants to post an argument for one way or another then i will do that.

All the guys on the HUD on fence get together and all the guys on the HUD off fence get together and write somthing up.

If you are keeping the planes Axis for Axis, Allied for Allied, the hud shouldn't be disabled, but the Vehicle ID tags should. Padlock should be left off for the reasons mentioned by jedi. I know on RB, you could padlock targets before you saw them.

I think the problems are that you can't turn off just the ID without killing the HUD, if you leave the HUD the ID tags ill still show up and people can use them.

There's no way to turn off the padlock so that will still need to be left alone. I think we need to make it as realistic as possible with in the limits of the game right now.

I've tossed a few idea's to Spanky about the setup and if he likes everything then i'm sure he'll post the ROE.

Even without padlock, HUD off gives advantage to a certain group of flyers.. those of us with big screens and hi-res. Since I upgraded I can visibly spot fighters over 5 miles away.

Spanky here...

Yep i use a 15" monitor at 800x600 so that limits me a bit.

I really think that even though some people might call padlock unfair that there is still good reason to not have hud. Padlock can find a target but your not exactly going to cycle through them.

What do you guys think of agreeing to turn off see enemy aircraft on map?

Remember until we see some code changes alot of this stuff will be based on trust.

With HUD ON in a dogfight it always turns into a "get Tailslide" mission.. unless Kopper is there then they leave me alone hehe

Anyways, not so fun with hud on either.

Razer.. hit Alt-V. that turns off the id tags. Hit C to turn off the id on the left. Alt-W is for gun loadouts. Alt I is for the list in the upper left that shows everyones scores.
I would say let the hud be on, but please don't use what you don't need. If you have good eyesight, then please turn off the id tags. Please don't use the "Radar". Please don't "Pick" on a person in the game. Fly the mission as it was intended to be flown. Fufill the mission requirements. Try and do things that will challenge you, and also give everyone elses experience a boost.

Spanky here...

Yeah tail I must admit i do that, but only because everyone knows they can brag if they take you down.

Mirthain Personally I agree with you. Some people need help or just want it. Even with every little helper, the map, HUD, Padlock (if i ever used it) i still suck ass.

I would personally like to have hud on but have it so it didn't show the speed and not such a big box. Something more like a dot that disappered as you got close enough to see.

HUD off, no problem...but ID tags off and no padlock, I'm not interested.

I don't need to know who is flying the plane...just a designator of friend or foe.

Neal,

Thats just it, with HUD OFF so goes the ID tags OFF.

The game needs some code work to help us fine tune things.

If padlock is ON,then ID tags need to be ON.

But, once in awhile, some of us would like the challenge of finding our own aircraft and ID'ing them on our own, while all others in the same mission, flew under the same exact pretense.

This game comes closer to that reality than any other. And, thats a step closer to Historical Combat.

I don't wish to fly like this that often, just once a week would be a blast.Seperating the hud into...

Overhead Hud (speed,alt,direction,g's)

Ammo Counter

ID tags

Target Map

And, giving a Padlock OFF check box till such a time Padlock could be fixed,if its even possible at all?

Overhead HUD, ammo counter, ID tags, Map and Padlock are all items which can be turned on and off from the keyboard. This keyboard selection changes their settings in the ini. file to either on or off.

Therefore, can a custom keyboard inp. file be created which prevents turning them on (kills the appropriate key)? And a custom ini. file created which sets these items to "Off"?

Then, could these custom files then be loaded as a par.data file and be required for "historic night" just like PlanePak 5.3 is required to fly online?

If this could be done then you could tailor realty as you see fit.

I agree with you, Rattler. For those who prefer that type of simulation, they should do it, absolutely. The main object is still fun, and everyone has a right to have fun. I think this idea is a great one, and wish all who participate a great time. I look forward to reading about how it goes, and hope it is a smashing success!

Tailslide, you should have your id on. That way I know when to stay the hell out of your way.

Get Tailslide yeah right, how many of us have actually managed to do that?

It has been my experience that you either "get Tailslide" or get got by Tailslide

So far, I have never accomplished this, but going offensive against TS is preferrable to losing site of him and going for another. Lately I've had the opportunity a couple of times to fly wing for Tail and pick off those that go after him
