How does landing gear know it has to be extracted when a plane starts on the ground?
Is that engine code or openplane code, and can it be applied to folding wings?

At the moment we explicitly (as in, with code) force the gear down.

At the moment I can't think of a way for you to do the same with the wings (although there are many more creative OP people than me out there).

I think the easiest solution would be to have the a/c built with it's wings folded, and have to press a key to bring them down, how hard can that be, I don't see the difference in making it so the wings are down, or on the other hand, making it so the wings are up. It really baffles me when this seems such a simple answer, maybe it's cause I don't build a/c but it seems easy to me

Nat,

that wont work cause people that start off in the air would have the wings folded

The only thing I can think of is to key the wing-unfolding to the engine status. If the engine is on, wings unfold. Engine off, wings fold.

That way AI planes on the ground/deck would unfold their wings as they cranked engines and away they'd go. Starting inflight would be...er...temporarily disorienting but perhaps still workable as long as you always started with some altitude. How the AI would react to that I can only guess.

But so far I haven't had any luck keying any extra functions to the engine start. My DOF's don't seem to recognize the 'inpEngineToggle command, but if I create a new command, 'cmdEngineToggle, that works OK. But do the AI planes actually invoke keyboard commands, or do they start engines, retract gear, etc based on internal coding?

As for having the airplane start with wings folded, that can be done with manipulation of the DOFs, but you then need two models of the plane so that you can do an airborne start as well.

yeah but jedi, when we do start putting the aircraft on carrier decks, theyll need to taxi out of their parked formation before unfolding their wings. and the only way to taxi is to turn on the engine.
