A friend of mine got the 550E Coppermine CPU for about $230, and an ASUS board for it for about $100. He's running this 550 MHz chip at 800 Mhz and reports that his Quake fps have doubled. Are any of you running a similar system to this? I'm seriously looking at purchasing this mobo/chip combo in the near future and would like some info on how much better SDOE runs with it. btw, I'm an overclocker myself and have been running an Intel Celeron 300A at 450Mhz for almost 2 years now without any trouble. I told myself long ago that when the CPU speed nearly doubles (even if overclocked reliably) it's time to upgrade. Well, that time is now. Here's a great site for more info for those new to this concept. See their links page for even more great links. http://www.overclockers.com/

Sounds like a great idea man. I see no problems with that. I just wish i could afford that chip. Unfortunatly i will be going with a celeron. But still a cel at 466-525 and maybe even more will kick the crap out of the p2 266. IP: Logged |

Pete, just wanted to say thanks for the link, been having trouble o/cing my AMD500, I see from this I'll have to up the core voltage, thanks alot IP: Logged |

Pete: I recently upped my cpu to a 500E, on a Abit BX6-2 MB. I have not tried oc'ing it yet, but the Abit newsgroups are full of folk who have done so successfully on this and newer Abit boards, with no extra cooling nor voltage adjustments. I have seen successfully posted speeds in the 700-800 range. I would presume ASUS boards are capable of the same.If I decide to oc this one, I will let you know how it fares. But I'm so happy with the increase from my 300 right now, that it might be a while. ------------------ nealg=FC=

I've got a 650E thats running at 730 right now.. after I get a 133 mobo I hope to be able to run it at 867 (I've heard of people doing it). TS IP: Logged |

Having had a read through that web site, the ppl that are getting best results at high o/c speeds are using some wicked overcooling, I think you should go look there first Spanky before paying for upgrade. Anyway, the cooling being used when o/cing to the max is usually water cooling or better.. I don't think that's much of an option for most of us.. LOL, I just add more or bigger fans.. lol. Just finished making a double fan large heatsink combo, thats working alot better now (aswell as having a power pack fan blowing directly onto the Voodoo, and 1 other set to blow across the m/board)IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. Nat i would have OCed this sucker right away if i could have but you can't with this mother board. All you can select is what chip you have. P2 266 300 and what i suspect is 333(its actually labled something like tech support only or somthing) hows that for a crap mother board. Not multiplier or bus speed selections. I intend on OCing any thing i get right away. I think all those guys go overboard with the cooling. And i will never understand why its such a problem. I guess PC chips are pretty unstable. My PSX gets up to 120F inside and thats the Air temp so you can imagine what the chips are at. And it runs with no problems. PS i was excited over the K7 but i think having to buy a new MoBo and power supply turns people off. You can't upgrade in steps. Besides its still a little out of my price range. If i want a cel i just need a Mobo and chip. If i want a K7 (well i do but if i could get one) i would need Chip, Board, Ram and new power supply. That kinda sucks. If i was buying a new computer though i would do it. or if i just had more money. [This message has been edited by Spanky the Mad Dog (edited 03-12-2000).] IP: Logged |

I've read of people going to 867 without any kind of active cooling.

Isn't it true that due to the limitations of AGP on typical motherboards, you can't overclock beyond about 10% without running into problems (assuming you use an AGP graphics card anyways)? I've heard that AGP runs at 66 mhz, and that the motherboards only support a 1:1 and a 2:3 ratio, no 1:2, which is what you'd need if you were going to hit the next level (133 mhz). Do you guys know what's the word on this?charm IP: Logged |

Thats why I need a new mobo.. I believe they allow 133 to the ram but clocks down the normal bus speeds for your cards. With a regular mobo (non 133) I can get up to 112 but past that I have trouble. TS IP: Logged |

Char, I've heard this, thats why alot of "serious" overclockers go for the Voodoo3 PCI Version which isn't affected by overclocking, and is only marginally slower than the AGP version in anycaseIP: Logged |

in this site http://cs5.cssftware.com/cpudb/index.cfm you can see if the model of your processor is good for overclock you can check processors from the same FPO/Batch # , s-code and week as yours, if its a good processor to overclock by seeing in what speeds people have been able to put it...------------------ /============\ TIEFox UIN: 965609 BRAZIL! \============/

I bought a Coppermine FCPGA Celeron 566 a few weeks ago, as well as an Abit BE6-2 Mobo. Overclocks to 638 (8.5x75) no problem. I haven't had the chance to try out 705 (83MHz FSB), but I'll give it a shot in the near future. 100MHz FSB doesnt even start, no beeps no nothing. MoBo needs a CMOS reset to get it running again It might work with some voltage increase, but I don't think its worth it. On the other hand, a Celeron 850 would be nice Camo IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. I'm looking at a soyo MB to maximise my OCing ability. Have to get the link for you guys looking to buy. http://www.bxboards.com/a-list.shtml Notice the board i want is #1 on this sites A list. Soyo SY-6BA+ IV One of the great things about this board is all the bus speeds. Right where its important for us Celeron users. Who cares about 20 bus speeds over 100mhz for us guys using a 66mhz bus chip. Check it out. http://bxboards.com/mainboard/slot1/sy6ba+iv.shtml "66/75/78/81/83/90/95/" thats 4 extra speeds to try and maximize your speed with tons over 100 for when you upgrade to a P3 chip later. 100/105/110/112/113/115 112/117/118/120/122/124/126/133/135/137/138 140/142/144/150/155 Well they got there cel 366 to run at 100 and 110 speeds that won't probly happen with the cel 466 chip i'm getting cause a 466 would be running at 700 with a 100 bus. With all those under 100mhz speeds though i hope to hit some where near 600. Still be pretty kick ass.
