An Unhappy Episode:

It was during the course of a Luftwaffe attack on Londn during September 1940 that Galland reported a victory that left him with a feeling of distinct unease. Having downed a Supermarine Spitfire, Galland realized that he was becoming short of fuel and set course for JG26's base at Guines in northern France. West of Dungeness, however, Galland and other pilots of his unti spotted a lone Hurricane. Galland attacked, causing considerable damage, and saw that the fighter was on fire. The Hurricane should have crashed, but instead glided on in a series of gentle turns. Three times Galland and other German pilots attacked the single Hurricane, but failed to knock down the British fighter. Finally Galland flew close alon side the flying wreck, which was completely riddled by German fire and had smoke pouring out of it, and saw the British pilot sitting dead inside the shattered cockpit. Galland could not bring himself to make another attack, and the German pilots watched as the Hurricane planed slowly down to the ground as though flown by ghostly hands. With a bitter taste in his mouth, Galland headed for home in Guines.

Adolf Galland, an ace with 104 confirmed victories.
