Quick video card question. Would a 32mb TNT card perform better than a 16 mb Voodoo 3 3000? I realize that SDOE is best in glide but is that for graphics or speed. Don't get me wrong, I love clean graphics but I am looking for FPS as well. And if it is for graphics id there much drop off in graphics quality? The reason for this question is that I am in the market for an Athelon 1000 system and I want the fastest and cleanist video card without going way overboard. Feedback please. Thanks, -=BAB=- Gunner IP: Logged |

I think Gateway comes with a 64MBDDR GeForce, which I imagine is a shade faster than a V3 3000.IP: Logged |

So far it's been that glide gives you an extra 10fps over d3d for comparably priced cards. D3D isn't bad though: I have a TNT2U on a p3-650 and it runs 1600x1200 with fog pushed out to 12.5 and detail maxxed faster than it did on my 450 at 800x600 with fog at 10 and detail down two notches. I've heard the new GeForce cards don't buy you much fps gain for dx6 designed games but theyre amazing in dx7. Voodoo's been pushing the dx6 performance higher with their new cards but their dx7 support isn't as impressive. TS

Here's what I heard: You don't need 32 mb onboard ram unless you are running at resolutions higher than 1024x768. If you aren't the upper 16 megs arent adressed. Sounds dubious, that ram doesn't affect speed at lower resolutions.IP: Logged |

Forgive me but what are we we saying here. TNT good or TNT bad. I need a little break down. The card in question is the nVidia 32mb Gforce 256. Or is there a better Voodoo out there than the Voodoo 3-3000?Gunner IP: Logged |

Speed and lookswise, if you're just buying it for SDOE the latest and greatest voodoo is the way to go as long as you can run them at high resolutions? I know the V-2s didn't like hi-res. If you are getting B17-2 you'll want the geforce 'cause it runs SDOE plenty fast plus will be amazing on Dx7 designed games. TS "Fire BAAAAAAD" - Frankenstein on SNL IP: Logged |

Well then how does it look. Is there a big change in the quality of the picture between glide and 3D3? And how much does the CPU affect FPS. With a 1000mhz CPU I was hoping to end my "stealth mode" on-line and transfer more damage on the guy Im shooting at. I had hoped the cable modem would take care of that. I have found it is good for hosting but no real advantege packet-wise. Like I was saying before, I want FPS without loosing resolution.Yea, I know, I want everything. My wife is ready to put a dent in my head for buying a monster system but, a mans gotta do what a mans gotta do. -=BAB=- Gunner IP: Logged |

on FPS without losing resolution I think you have to go for the Voodoo, but if you really want a serious card, wait a while till the Voodoo5 comes out, the TOTR model will have 128mb ram onboard, check it out at 3dfx.com, but from my experience, the image quality is better in D3D, (barring some texture glitches) which the Voodoo runs in anycase, and for myself now on 500mhz + V3 2000, I don't lose and FPS when in D3D, it's the same as Glide.Seriously, I'd get the V3 3500 or wait a lil for the V5 6000

TNT 2 and GeForce or the kings of image quality (although some may argue that Maxtro G400 is infact better). It denpends on what type of gamer you are and what you run. The image quality between glide and d3d is like night and day to me. I can never see myself using glide ever again. V3's aren't any faster than TNT's framerate wise. And if you dig really high resolutions, the GeForce is the only way to go.IP: Logged |

I see the camps are divided. I had a feeling this might happen. SDOE is the main game I play. I also have EAW and DF2, thou I don't play them much. And I am very interested in B17 II. So is Glide on the way out? What other games use glide? I guess knowing how much the CPU effects FPS would be helpful.-=BAB=- Gunner [This message has been edited by Gunner (edited 03-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

If you are looking at B17II then you might want to look at the GeForce cards....B17II will support hardware T&L with Dx7, which is something the Voodoo Cards will not do.IP: Logged |

Correct me if I'm wrong but a 3dfx card can run both Glide and d3d, right? But a TNT can not run Glide. So why limit yourself to just d3d if (big "if") this next generation of d3fx cards are powerful enough to run d3d as well or almost as well as a TNT only card?IP: Logged |

Gunner -If it's high resolution and speed you want, in EAW, FS, what have you... currently the way to go is a GeForce card with DDR ram (like the Elsa Erazor X2 - which I bought). I run SDOE at 1600x1200 and stay over 35fps while online and in the 50's most of the time while offline. FS looks amazing at that res and is very playable at those speeds. This is assuming you want it now and don't want to wait for the V5/V6's, which will have amazing fill rates but no hardware T&L, which is being supported by DX7 and will be in B-17II. By the way the Voodoo6 - thats the one that will have 128MB of ram - has an estimated street price of $550. So...unless you want your wife to seriously dent your head I'd avoid it. Jerry, The TNT uses the "Generic" Open GL engine, as opposed to the 3DFX cards which use Glide, a mini-port of Open GL. It will be nice to see if they get the patch for SDOE together, because it has support for the standard OGL. The decision is a tricky one, but I must say that the Nvidia cards are really the way to go. Mirthain=FC=IP: Logged |

SDOE has display problems with TNT cards, I use a TNT2 Ultra and had the same thing on the original TNT. Normally the image quality is better under TNT than voodoo but not with the glitches present in SDOE. TS

Getting huge FPS increases since I went from a 450 to 650, sdoe is definitely CPU bound if you have a decent video card. TS

What kind of glitches are all of you getting with with the TNT cards? Does the game crash or do the graphics go nuts? And yes I want to avoid large dents in my head, hehe. -=BAB=- Gunner IP: Logged |

The textures 'tear' for one thing. Maybe someone can show you a screenshot. It really just depends on what type of games you play. I just can't see bying a card based on one game...especially one thats over a year old. You may find another sim that comes along that you like that works better with card a, than card b. I still keep my old V2 just in case I ever need to fire up F18 Korea , LB2 or F15, although i must admit...its collecting dust in a shelf. Comparing 3dfx to Nvidia is like Fords and Chevy's...It just depends on what redneck you ask. Some have Calvin peeing on a Ford logo while others have Calvin peeing on a Bowtie... IP: Logged |

You get sort of crawling jaggies along the cliffs of dover and where the fog layer meets the ground (if it does). Also some less obvious ones. The upcoming patch will fix it if it gets released. TS

Well heck TS, no wonder you can't see me half the time. My stupid AMD K6 400 can't keep up with most of you guys. But I am hoping that my new 1Gig CPU will remedy that situation. Only problem with that is I won't be able to sneak up on you now I believe I have made up my mind. (Drum roll please) I think I am going to go with the Gforce 32mb card. (Gunner bids a fond farewell to Voodoo) I thank you for your help. I know There will be other sims. B17II for one, but I don't plan quiting SDOE anytime soon. If there is anything else I need to know, please fill me in.-=BAB=- Gunner IP: Logged |
