Interesting and generally well informed read. However, I was surprised by the omission of the Tempest from the discussion and the off-hand dismissal of the Russian Lavochins and Yaks as failures in the air superiority role seems just plain odd.

It's difficult to find good information on Russian fighters so they get this treatment a lot The Yak was to the Germans what the Zero was to the Americans but even more so. It could out-climb, out-dive, out-turn, and was faster than the 190a4, though it's major drawbacks were poorer high altitude performance and range.

A couple pages about compressibility on the p38 without stating a major cause.. the completely horizontal stabilizer.

I liked his explanation of wing loading though:

"For those of you who do not understand this wing loading thing, let me make a comparison between a couple of birds almost everyone is familiar with. Doves fly fast, and are very acrobatic birds. They have a low wing loading. Ducks fly fast, and can dive like a stone, but they are not very acrobatic. Ducks have a high wing loading. The former have a lot of wing lift for their body weight; the latter have a lot of body weight compared to their wing lift. "

Sorry. I just went to the bibligraphy section and saw your post about the same site. I also don't pay attention to that section.

BTW, does Aui mean anything in Swedish?

Aui, I read the Bibliography section and saw your post about this site when you posted it. I was so impressed with the article that I printed it and kept it. Thanks, and thank you for posting things where they belong.

Don't appologize I just wanted to point out that the bibliography section actually contains many good links that people have found.

Ehh... Aui doesn't mean anything. It's a, hmm... swenglish, way to prenounce my name Arvid that my friends use sometimes to tease me. Also comes in handy when they/I am drunk. A lot easier to prenounce in such situations And it can be reduced even further to just ah or uh.

The germans experimented with hanging cannons on gondolas from below the duck's wings but it caused to much drag for them to migrate back to England.

Yes the Yak is always underated. It was one of the best fighters of the war. The LW had orders not to engage them under 15,000 ft.
