Have a question. I bought a Voodoo2 card about 7 months ago for @ 139.99 (which was supose to be on sale from $199.99). About 1 month later the Voodoo3 cards came out for $99.00. My question is, is there much difference in the cards? I am thinking about upgrading and giving my old card to my son. But want to know is there a advantage to buying the Voodoo3?------------------ Suns Site http://nosuntzu.homestead.com/index.html

NIGHT and DAY difference. You are talking higher resolution, faster framerates, better image quality...you name it.In a 3dfx hater, but the V3's are nice cards. I did own a V3 for a while, and it was great in SDOE and Flacon4 IP: Logged |

Current best guess for V5000 series is begining of April and V6000 is mid April. Btw - V6 is supposed to hit Gigapixel fill levels and be nearly twice as fast V5 - no word on pricing yet but I would expect around $300, same as current crop of DDR GeForce cards.-Stark IP: Logged |

BTW - Theoretical max FPS on the V6 would be somewhere around 1100FPS at 1024x768 - of course thats only theoretical. You can actually expect MUCH lower FPS than that due to processor and monitor limitations. But 100+ would not be unreasonable to expect in most current games, assuming the vid card is the current bottlneck.-Stark IP: Logged |

I have a voodoo 3, but it doesn't seem to support 1024x768 mode. it frustrates mee to see my videocard work at 800x600 with framerates of 60-70 fps when I can have the same in higher resolutions. If I where you I supports with FS. It works fine in 1024x768 mode with all my other games, so it's not my monitor or CPU.should first see what resolutions your card Codfish IP: Logged |

Oops my earlyer message got all tangled up... Here is the right version:------------------- I have a voodoo 3, but it doesn't seem to support 1024x768 mode in FS. it frustrates mee to see my videocard work at 800x600 with framerates of 60-70 fps when I can have the same in higher resolutions. If I were you I should check if the videocard you are willing to buy supports high resolutions with FS (maybe test it). My voodoo 3 works fine in 1024x768 mode with all my other games, so theres nothing wrong with my card or operating system. Codfish -------------------- IP: Logged |

Jerry,Well, I just got a DDR Ram GeForce a week ago and I gotta say it is awesome. I don't run FS in any less than 1600x1200 now and can maintain 35-40 fps while online. Stunning. But as far as performance goes vs V5 and V6 - in raw numbers V5 will be a bit faster and V6 way faster - and assuming that the app is using Glide it should toast the GeForce. I have heard that chip the V5 and V6 are based on have some issues with D3D currently and that a DDR GeForce currently outpaces them but these are supposed to be manufacturing issues which will be solved in the production line. So far the only V5/V6 demo'd was using A0 chips - meaning they were the very first ones made - so they are bound to have some issues, all first run chips do. -Stark IP: Logged |

Thanks a lot Stark. I'll probably be upgrading in the next year so I'm starting to collect info.Based on AMD's 1G announcement today I'll be able to pick up a low end 750MHz by Christmas and they'll be giving away your GeForce. LOL IP: Logged |

Spanky here... I'm not starting a console vs computer war but when you compare the #s all those vid cards are a huge rip when you compare them to a ps2. IF sony would put the chip on a computer card we would be rocking. But I can't see them doing that. I'll prob stay voodoo for the next card

... Spanky,Consoles can get away with what they can because of "two" outstanding reasons ... .."proprietary chips/processors" and "proprietary standards" and NO OPERATING SYSTEM... When you have single embeded-chips running propriatary routines ... there is no processing overhead. One does polygon set-up & rendering ... One does texture layout and mapping ... One does any necessary physics computations ... ...Lastly, There is no operating overhead to worry about. THAT is why consoles are able to pump the graphics that they can ... plain and simple. I amazes me how quickly we forget our PC are "technically" glorifed word processors! Sure we can pack'm full of 3D cards..sound-cards the like ... but they still find their foundations in word processors ... ... Windows ... Explorer ...ActiveDesktop ... MS Office ... and "NON-PROPRIETARY" hardware and software! So yes consoles are supremely powerfull .... However, ya ever play a simulation on one? (Yuck!) IP: Logged |

When I upgraded to 3D a few months ago, I tested all of the then available cards, kept the Diamond Stealth III S540 and returned the rest to an understanding Onvia.com. I am amazed at this underrated card. I was very unimpressed with Voodoo which cant handle 32 bit graphics, and has sloppy texture definition. The TNT cards had about a 3fps advantage over the Stealth but the Stealth had much crisper graphics - gauges really leaped out at you - and most amazingly at half the price of all the other cards. The Stealth card is work of art in efficiency. 4 8mb chips, 1 renderer chip, small attached heatsink, and one small upgradeable bios chip. Very efficient when compared with all the stuff found on all the other cards. No wonder Stealth so much cheaper. The outstanding clarity might be attributable to S3TC texture compression currently only being used on the S3 chip used on the Stealth which is why Im going to the bother of recommending this product. Want other chipmakers to use this type of texture compression which has been supported by Microsoft since DX6 came out, or something like it. You dont here much about the Stealth because its almost always last in raw frame rate tests compared to the other more famous cards but not by much, and the texture compression just gives phenomenal clarity on close ups. Would like to see Diamond rewarded for getting off the junky - frame rate obsessed cards I see out there at twice the price gauging the consumer. One final statement about the Stealth - soundcard does matter in SD. As amazing as the Stealth was in other games such as Aces High, in SD I needed to upgrade my Turtle Beach Daytona to a Monster 300 to really get the sim to run well. Stealth also optimized for 3dnow, and SSI. So ends my rant.IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. K I realize the difference between a console and a computer. But its still sad that we get such crap performance out of our graphics cards compared to the polys this sucker can push. It has its own problems though. Mainy the 4 meg video ram. That pretty much sucks huge as. Course it has a huge bandwidth going to the vid chip so it can swap them in and out faster. About sims on consoles I think they would work just fine on a HDTV. The only thing stopping it is a decent stick combo. And since the PS2 and X-BOX and i'm guessing probly Dolphin will all have USB i don't know if that will be a point to argue. And the whole adults VS kids(consoles) thats just plain wrong. You guys are stuck in the days of 13 year olds playing nintendo. More people over 20 own a Playstation then under 20. I can name about 20 people off the top of my head that own a PSX and they are all over 20. Almost all of those people DON't own comptuers. Probly because they are too damn exspensive. And a big hassle to use most of the time. Any way about vid cards. I'm very happy with my voodoo banshee. I just need a new CPU. IP: Logged |

I haven't been very impressed with the PS2 screens I've seen. They don't look better than what I've seen on a good PC. No one company is going to be able to corner the market on fast video cards. If Sony develops a faster chip, so will Nvidia, 3dfx, etc.IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. I agree the first games arn't looking better then computer games but they are looking around the same level. And consider that they are 1st generation games. Basically just Playstation 1 games revamped. And consider that you are getting those graphics at 1/4 the price of a good PC. I'm not saying replace your computer but if it gets the backing of games its going to be freaking great. Oh yeah rememeber that you have a DVD player in it too for people that havn't jumped on that yet. Glad to see you made a choice Sun Tzu. I'm sure it will be great. Oh yeah i have played a simulation on a console. Its called Gran turismo and GT2. Find somthing like that on PC for me.
