As the open plane contest draws nearer, I was just wondering about where we would've been without the people who made the tools to make open plane possible.
Without their wonderful programs, there wouldn't be any open plane. Hippie's extractor and AC3D plugins, Bryan Russell's Openplane Studio, and the Parfile tools to unbig and untiff files.
Back before Fighter Squadron ever came out I used to visit two FS sites, one of which was Pete Hawks.
I remember one of them mentioning that Parsoft was going to have an addon after FS came out, that would let you make your own planes.
What ever became of that?

As I sit there staring into an AC3D screen, it would've been a lot easier if that addon had been made. Now you need Hippie's files and Bryans program and AC3D or 3dsmax or whatever.

It's a daunting challenge to make any kind of plane or vehicle or tool for FS, and I thank those for the tremendous amount of time and work that goes into a project.

FS would have dwindled a long time ago, without their effort.

Thanks to everyone!

Agreed!!! Bryan and Hippie kick ass! I waited and waited, and then when OPS came out I could do it!

I too was hopeful for the GTT OpenPlane editor, but after using the tools we have now, I am quite sure this is much, much better. I will tell you why:

These tools are VERY well made, and let you do almost anything. To really create OpenPlane stuff you need to seperate and indipendant applications, a OPS type of thing and a 3D program. If GTT tried to combine both, I bet you would get something much more user-friendly and easier to learn, but something MUCH less powerful. You could only do so much...

With the current set up we have now, any 3D app could in theory work with OPS so long as someone makes a pligin for it. This is the way to go. Now in the future, 3D guys can use the app of their choice! This will always be more powerful and easier to learn. Why not harness the power of other 3D vendors who know their stuff?

Also I think that Bryan has built us a top of the line app that is or will be superior to what any other party would have come up with. Extreemly bug-free, and Bryan has a great sense of UI - I love it. It is like a 0 learning curve, just go! And it helped my understand openplane too - the way it is layed out just makes sense.

So dauntless851, if you want to really 3D edit, its just gonna be a learning curve no matter what you do. Once you learn a 3D app like AC3D or whatever things get much easier. Just look how fast I built the Fokker DVIII, all with AC3D, Hippies tools, and OPS. The hardest part is just getting started, I can't explain how overwhealmed I was when I started. I have NO 3D experience what ever. I didn't even know what a vertex was LOL, I had to ask here! Also the OpenPlane doc blew my mind. Now all this makes perfect sense, but I can honestly say that it is not simple, and never could be. What we do is just not a simple task. I find it much more challenging than building datadriven, high-transaction, heavy load websites. It is a perfect balance of art, programming, physics, and history! But with such a challenge comes an amazing sense of joy with accomplishments. I would say that building OpenPlane aircraft has been one of the funnest things I have done.

I always wanted to be a composer, and now this satisfies most of the same requirements

So instead of wishing there was an easier way, let's push Bryan and any other relavant poeple to make plugins for other 3D apps! Then you can chose a 3D app that you are more comfy with. AC3D is not the world's easiest I think, it is buggy and the UI is a little primative. I love it because it is powerful and cheap - I live the bugs, and well about the learniung curve? I've all ready passed that one

Spanky here..

For sure. I would LOVE a plugin for 3dsmax that lets you import and export LOD.

SV, I would like to share your enthusiasm.
I never found out the help file I need to get started to build something. Not even a stupid cube - gee, I don't mean how to build a cube in 3D program... I'm not that dumb...
What are LODs and DOFs? I'm sure many would be happy to help but cannot due to difficulty to access information they need.
This is a goal I'm would achieve with The Gazette, if I there is someone able to explain clearly from the beginning what's needed.
