I sent the updated tank to Werner so hopefully he'll do whatever it is he was going to do to it soon, and then post it. I decided to figure out why it kept crashing the game when put into a mission. I just went over it with a fine comb, made a new SM file out of it (using the King Tiger tank as it's guts) and it works now.

So go figure.

Sv, have you tried hitting F7 in the flyable balloon? I think it already has a mannable turret in it. If not you should be able to just cut and paste whatever gun from the B-17 into the basket (just over the top of it).
