Recently I decided to try playing larger bombing missions. I have been having fun with a 9 17 mission vs 4 fws. The 17s win almost every time. The protective effect of formation flying is amazing. Anyway, this is a serious drain on framerate and at times it gets kind of slow (less than 10fps). I've tried a couple of things. Including messing with the 17s lods. This helps quite a bit (2-5 fps depending on distance). However the game still slows down a lot when planes get close.
Yesterday I was viewing the ini docs and noted a setting "DesiredSimRate". The docs state the default is 20 (consistent with the fps goal everyone talks about - but many TNT users have challenges achieving in big online missions). It also states that the physics engine is more accurate with higher settings.
My questions are: How much less accurate is the engine at lower settings (for example 10- 15)? Is this setting active online (in other words if I change it does my machine continue to work at my setting or is there a global setting)?
Results of an experiment I performed online:
1. My game didn't crash.
2. In high drain situations my fps drain was not as high as usual.
3. When fps dropped below 20 my stated airspeed was consistent with other players (I wasn't losing distance relative to them if our speed was the same)
4. I saw a higher frequency of target hits.
5. I got more kills than usual.
6. I got killed too - I thought more easily than usual.
