I'm ALWAYS in direct 3D. I haven't had my voodoo 2 in here since last summer. That props not supposed to be there, so there may be some visual conflicts with it. IP: Logged |

Nice job on the cowl flaps and engine detent JT! Are the cowl flaps adjustable or fixed in full vent position?[This message has been edited by roadtoad (edited 02-23-2000).] IP: Logged |

I apologize RT,that cowling is a seperate piece. I was not clear as to what you meant by open. I thought the Cowling was always in this position on the P47. Does it "breathe" like the cowling on the F4U Corsair? IP: Logged |

I believe it breathes in real life. Our cowling flaps are static, unfortunately. It would have increased the polygon count too much to have individual cowling flaps that move. Also, it would have been sadistic of me to expect Bjorn to work out all those DOFs. :-)IP: Logged |

Well it really looks good that way! ..in real life, the cowl flaps had automatic and manual positioning. In dead of winter they'd make sure they were closed to speed warmup - in real cold weather they'd put 10gal of gas into the oil to thin it out, and it'd evaporate out the breather stack as it warmed.IP: Logged |

Well, JT... I'd do it, but unfortunately I can't figure out a way to make it affect the engine temp, so it'd really be useless. Could be a cool show off, though. _ /Bjorn.IP: Logged |

Out of interest - how many polys in those P-47s?------------------ C/O Jagdgeschwader 5 'Eismeer' http://www.madasafish.com/jerry/jg5/ IP: Logged |

Jerry, a TON! But JT has set it up in such a way, they they don't kill FPS any more then any other User created planes. The High detail LODs are only visible from about 40 ft. and there is 5 Levels of detail through the whole plane. Razer IP: Logged |

Raz, I wouldn't say a ton... The poly count is generally higher than the default SDOE planes, but I kept it reasonable, even at the highest level LODs. The exterior is about a thousand, I think. That's not including the landing gear, which dissappears anyway when retracted. As long as people haven't taken to flying around with their gear hanging out-- like the AI does-- we'll be OK. :-) Raz is correct about the switchin distance, though. The highest level LODs only switch-in when they're within 40 or 60 feet away. The chances are slim that two or more planes will ever be that close and on screen, so it's a rare occasion that the highest level LODs are called in. In any case, I tested it in a furball with 8 P-47s, and the framerate was excellent-- about the same as if using any of the other fighters. By the way, there are only 4 levels of detail at the most. I actually did build 5 levels, but I found that 4 was more than sufficient.

Spanky here... I praticed a moving cowl by moving a copy of a landing gear door of the zero up to the top of the cowl on the zero and had it moving with the throttle. At full throttle it was amlmost closed and at none it was open quite a bit. I plan on using it on my p40. I think it adds extra life to the planes and shouldn't take many more poly. Specialy on the p40 as they are only on the bottom.

Intersting idea. The other point to make is that the cowl flaps are unlikely to be visable from the cockpit and are not needed after the first distance lod switch. So would the frame rate be impacted at all?------------------ Yardstick painted this
