Topic: New bugs, when is that patch coming?

Over the last couple of days there's been a weird bug happening with a few players. It happens when someone (usually the same person) fires at you, the next instant you crash to the desktop. If it was just myself I might suspect a setup problem but this has happened to a few I know of. What's causing this? I've even deleted all of sdoe and installed fresh. All I know is it's a right pain being part way through a mission then getting desktopped. If I choose to be on the same side as the 'offender' then I'm safe, but obviously that isn't always possible nor is it a proper fix. MH, is the patch any nearer to completion or have you shelved it? No carrots please.... ------------------

Hmmm.... I'm wondering... Could all our online troubles be connected to the self-made planes and the plane packs?Something wrong with the way the damage model is done in the planes? Camo IP: Logged |

I Haven't played recently .... but a few weeks ago it started to happen to me too.I thought at the time it was just me. Everything went fine, but as soon as I took the first hit (of many some would say !) I would just CDT. Curious ..... Camo .... I have a sneeking suspicion you may be onto something .... or maybe just a coincidence ??? Cheers, AGAS 5 [This message has been edited by AGAS - 5 (edited 02-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

Yup ... just confirming what Spyder had to say since it happened to both of us in the same mission last night.Seems to be related to damage or explosions somehow. The other night, I was watching a Ju88 go down and as soon as it hit the water and exploded, I was instantly sent to the desktop -- "Wing? I ain't got no wing ... I don't need no wing ... I don't have to fly with any stinkin' wing!" --- elf, after being strafed on the parking ramp [This message has been edited by elf (edited 02-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

There was a bug in the Ju88A-4 in the beta of the planepack that caused a CDT once when certain damage lods were envoked. I thought this had been fixed in the full version though. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

I find that trying to detach non existant parts has a tendency to cause a CTD or SDOE to simply go bye-bye.IP: Logged |

These are two seperate bugs.. the 5.3 JU88 causes lockups for me when destroyed but there's another problem I noticed even under 5.2... If I get a _lot_ of hits on someone they CTD.. this was really noticeable with mad dog when we had our 1 on 1 match but I've seen it shooting at spyder too. Haven't seen it with other people yet. That's one I hadn't experienced yet - although there have been many a time when Tailslide was chopping my crate to bits when it might have been welcome! I do remember it from the 1 on 1, though...I never made the connection at the time.As I play more of 5.3 online, I will watch to see if it happens to me...so far, and my involvement has been limited...the only thing I have noticed ( and this is not a confirmation, may just be the missions, connection, whatever ) it seems that the Allied planes suffer damage failure much easier and quicker now, with fewer hits. Perhaps the Axis guns are a bit more lethal? Or is that even possible? ------------------ nealg=FC=

Last night I tried online for the first time in a long time. Was a bit of a drag, I CTD'd out of half the games online. Not fun.I doubt we'll ever see another patch for SDOE. Its been almost a year since the last official patch and several months since the last beta. [This message has been edited by Falck (edited 02-22-2000).] IP: Logged |

I can laugh now but if I decide to play again and it happens to me I'll be ticked IP: Logged |

I don't know how all this relates but here is my recent experience. I began having serious crashes on the weekend. The game would freeze for no apparent reason both online and offline. I was flying 5.2 and using 5.3 beta8 as well. It would happen in both packs. Nothing would work - ctrl alt del had no effect. The sounds would just loop. I started removing files - suddenly I realized just how many extras have been aded to the game. Vehicles, textures, beta planes, missions, chameleon (awesome), control (great), sounds, effects, terrains, ground crew, openplane studio (and other op editors - i really should have kept this stuff out of my main game, 1.5.1 beta 4 and 5 the list keeps growing. Somehow I'd been free of problems until now. Back to square one, I got rid of most of the extras and deleted the swap files to start again. Then reloaded a bunch of things - big mistake (missions and planes primarily I think). I ended up having the same problem again. Even the mission editor was crashing. I got an error with it mentioning the opsim.dll file. So I uninstalled, deleted the folder, defraged and started again. Now I have the mission pack and the plane pack back in and things seem to be ok. Anyway, it's wierd that everyone seems to be having problems all of a sudden. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to rebuild your swap files. IP: Logged |

Spanky here... I think everyone should just uninstall SDOE delete the leftovers and defrag then reinstall everything. Spin be care full with that word swap file the swap file is your Win386.swp file in your root dir. I'm guessing your talking about the SDOE cache file. I wouldn't call that a swap file. Just a thought

Hmm so not just after xmas then? And yeah I removed everything, only added 5.3, all texture caches had to be rebuilt so I'm at a loss what to do now.

I also have completely uninstalled SDoE prior to 5.3(its the proper way to do it)I'm currently running 5.3 with no SDoE Control,no skin utilities, and only one added plane ...... the TA152. The only problem I've had is when hosting with a connection thats not very solid. Other than that,NO problems. I END TASK all except Exployer Systray Em_exec Before opening a connection to the net when playing online. I don't multi-task while online with SDoE. I know alot of folks do.ICQ,RW,net Browser..... ect. The problem has got to lye somewhere between folks drivers/hardware setups on their boxes or some of the stuff mentioned above. It doesn't happen to everyone. And some folks got alot of problems. This is key to finding the problem. And I've never played any Online 3D flightsim and never occasionally CTD or Locked totally. I think those that have the problem, should: Update Direct X,all vid-card & soundcard drivers. Uninstall SDoE & all its add-ons completely Defrag Reload and keep it simple.(altleast for troubleshooting purposes)Only the basics. And end task all non-essential programs. And see if that helps. Good Luck Rattler

Well been there and done that and now I found the ju88 bug Tail mentioned, I flew it fine but when I got shot and hit the deck I got desktopped. Never had a problem like this before and nothing's changed in my system such as vid cards/directx etc etc. It only happens when certain players are in the same game, that's what's really weird. You get a hit off a guy and desktop here I come. Like I said, stay on the same side and it's ok, that suggests more than a directx/video setup problem. ------------------

I'll be working on updating FS this weekend, so there'll be a new beta either Monday or soon after. The lawyers are taking longer than even I thought they could in chewing on the SOS NDA, so the semi-open source is going to take a bit longer to happen. IP: Logged |

Excellent news Michael! Any chance to get the beta patch without the debugging stuff, so that it can be used online? Spanky here... Well that sucks ass I was really hoping this SOS was going to go through soon. Whats taking them so long? It shouldn't be that hard should it? If they are taking so long isn't it going to cost you guys out the ass cause they bill by the hour or are they doing it cheap and taking along time cause they never have time to work on it?

I guess a lot of us might be of the opinion that the patch without the de-bugging code probably can't be any worse than the nightly array of problems we experience with the current patch now in use.And thanks for continuing to think of us Michael. I think we're all pretty excited with the new FM's of the 5.3, and can see an incredible new chapter of missions based on the new aircraft. It's just been really, really taxing as of late. More so I think than ever before. Again, thanks for thinking of us. We really do appreciate your help. Wish the days had more time in them so you could fly with us. Mk10=225th= IP: Logged |

Curiously, "Shouldn't be that hard" ranks right up there with "quick and easy" on the top 10 list of things software developers regret having said. :-)Mk. You may be right, but my experience is that there isn't a change so small you cannot screw it up, and no change that doesn't affect something you didn't expect. Sadly. I understand very well the need for proper testing. Unfortunately it's an activity generally not given as much time as it should. BTW, MH, this is in no way meant as critique of your work. I've just worked too long in the software business. _ /Bjorn.

To be honest I would be happy with the current patch 1.5 with the mission send bug fix and no other enhancements, to keep us flying peacfully for a while. So does the semi-open source debacle mean a non debug release until that's sorted?
