Is there a way that we can get more than 1 pilot in a plane, like on the B-17 it only showes the pilot, what about the co-pilot?------------------ Watch For Falling Focke-Wulf's IP: Logged |

That can be done easily, but it will make the FPS even lower. ------------------ Thanks, James "Razor747" Smith Check out the SDOE Flight Line! I am constantly adding new things. Click on image above to go to my site.

Maybe remove something else like the rear eye candy structures in the bombers. Being able to add 1 or 2 bombers more and keep the fps up would improve the sim immensely.

I agree - we really need to do something to keep the FPS down, thus making the game more playable. I run a PII 300 w/ 64 megs of ram and a CL TNT, and during some missions I could really use a few extra FPS. I've thought about this for a long time, trying to think of things that are very unnecessary and could be removed with no real effect to the visual aspect of the game, other than speeding it up a little. Unfortunatly, I'm not very familiar with modeling or openplane, so I cannot really apply any of my ideas =( If anyone has any thoughts/ideas on what can be done here and how, it'd be great to try and get a project going.... as I understand it, this is something that has turned many people away from SDOE, the fact that it requires a very fast machine to run a more complex/interesting scenaro. Cheers to all.... ------------------ -Capt. CanucK 166 Bulldog Sqn, RCAC IP: Logged |

A quick "patch" for those that can do it relating to FR. I'm sure you've noticed that all the texture maps in SDOE are in 24bit color, I'm also sure you all know this is so unefficient it's unreal! The terrains only need 256 colors, you really don't need more, and from what I can tell a/c skins and textures are the same. I'd suggest batch converting all textures to 256 colors, or at the very least into 16bit color, anything but 24bit it really will make a big difference. Also, open up PP5.3 and batch convert all the TIF files for the a/c using infraview and add ZIP compression to the textures. After all, it's the textures that are our main concern, and we're using colors that are both unneccesary and a bit format that causes slow loadingIP: Logged |

Nat, That will have no effect on frame rate. All textures are converted on startup to the format best used by your 3d card. Most of the time this is a 16bit format. IP: Logged |

I was looking at the pilot, and he has quite a few polys to him. You could probably 1/2 the polys, and still maintain a decent looking pilot, then copy him to another position. This wouldn't do anything to the frame rate.------------------ Cheers! Jaguar The FS Hangar IP: Logged |

That sounds good, if we take out 1/2 of the polys then adding another copilot would work just fine------------------ Watch For Falling Focke-Wulf's

Michael, thanks for that, this means that converting any textures is unnecessary (which I had done alot of) I saw that the textures were done in 24bit color and naturally assumed this would be how they are displayed. Thanks

changing lod distances may help. I had recently tried pushing the distances for the higher detail lods closer to the b17. this seemed to help a bit offline. I actually was able to play (at a reasonable fps rate) missions with 6 17s in them. The next thing that might help is a very basic lod for long distance. The challenge I think is to keep the detail high enough from 3500 to 350 feet without killing fps. This is the typical close fighting distance while anything less is usually just for admiring the 3d models. If we add a second pilot the make sure the lod distance is close so he only appears when you are in the cockpit. By the way Kopper the survival rate was pretty good. IP: Logged |

Just wondering how would I go about changing these lod distances... Is it a feature you can change in the in-game options?Duh - maybe I should go check.. heh ------------------ -Capt. CanucK 166 Bulldog Sqn, RCAC IP: Logged |

Spanky here.. In a way yes. If you turn down your object detail all the way you will notice that the highest level LODS almost never switch in except when your REALLY close. even that doesn't seem to help my FPS too much in huge missons. I think it is more of a CPU thing then a vid card thing sometimes.
