It's a Ia, or a 'Whirlabomber'. How do you get the engines to not quite work all the time :B? Looks cool! I think I might have some bomb rack picts for ya, and a three view of the half black/half white skin.[This message has been edited by Whirlwind (edited 02-18-2000).] IP: Logged |

It was Britian's 1940 attempt at a twin engine long range fighter escort, that neither had the range or the (engine) durability. It could hold it's own against a 109, but never partied with the Spits and the Hurricane's during the BOB due to only two units being equipped with them. All support was dropped in 1942 when the Perigin (yeah, something like that) engine production line was converted to Merlins, and the Westland production line was converted to produce Spits (or was it Hurricane's?). So without parts, and without engines, the plane was taken out of service.I think the Wywern was Westland's 1943 high altitude fighter, using Merlin's I beleive, and equipped with a presurized cabin, ect. Unforutnately, by the time of its first flight, (1944) there was no need for it, so production stopped after a few prototypes were made. The Wywern had a fin-tip horizontal stabalizer assembly and a wider wingspand than the Whirlwind. I also think the 'bullet' on the tail was bigger. IP: Logged |

Thanks Whirl - only appropriate that you'd have the answer to what's a Whirlwind ..this is a Mk2 - basically a what-if-they'd gotten-Merlins thing (who wants to download a ride that breaks all the time). Like the original it's very fast, the inline 20mm in the nose are nice, and the more reliable Merlins make it an interesting flier.. Panzer's Dad flew the BoB, and since this bird has been a fav of Panzer for a very long time, "Crikey" is coming. .Makes one wonder about the p38 - the most produced mark was the L-Model, and its performance specs were better than the Mustang everywhere but between 25-28000ft (must be why games model the J?); and since it used the same Allison that powered the A-36 before the Merlins made it a Mustang, you gotta wonder what a p38 could have done with a pair of Merlins.[This message has been edited by roadtoad (edited 02-18-2000).] IP: Logged |

I am happy that the Brits had the foresight to name a plane after me, 30 something years before I was born. Actually, the plane caught my eye because I thought it was a British attempt at something better than a Me110. It kind of was.IP: Logged |
