Yesterday, Razer747 was kind enough to let me try his VTOL Lancaster. It's got the Huey's main rotor/engine combo on it and it flys like a dream. A true blast! Well, I had this little Harrier that has been standing by, that Ron Walker sent me the mesh of. I asked Razer747 if he thought he could convert my F-15C to make it VTOL. He said SURE! Well, within 1 HOUR I had a brand new VTOL F-15C (which will be converted into a true Sea Harrier) and what a blast it is!

It doesn't use the rotor, but instead, you press the V key and rotate the "nozzles" to 90 degs. After getting about 15-20 kts forward speed, press V and UP you go! You can take off at a dead stop but it's tricky, fun but tricky. Well, as you can imagine I was up late just trying to land in some crazy places.

Here are a few pics...

(anything that says Harrier) It's still the F-15C on the outside but it gives you the idea. It is so much fun doing approaches to crazy places at like 20-30 knots, hitting Shift-B (to set parking brakes) before you land so when you do land you have max braking applied. Using this method I did my best landing yet, next to the Tower at Woolrich (up on that tiny pad). Also in the cave near Royal Tonbridge. And another one, a quick test onto a roof at one of the airfields.

My motivation was a special on the Harrier the other night on TV. And let me say, although flying the Huey is fun, this thing feels harder to fly. Just like the real Harrier pilot on the show said you are riding a knife edge, trying to stay balanced. With a chopper the main rotor creates a lot of inertia and feels pretty forgiving (although of course, very difficult), but with the Harrier, you don't have that added luxury.

As soon as I have this thing textured, nice landing gear installed, working nozzles installed and a very basic cockpit I'll post a beta. One thing I'm still trying to work out are the mini jets that control pitch and yaw when in slow/hover mode. If I can get this working it'll be even better.

Oh, the best part so far is that the AI can still fly it! When a human takes over of course you then have the option of going VTOL. But for regular missions the AI can/will be able to fly.

It's truly a fun and unique experience Thanks Razer747 for your great help!

Pete, this sounds awesome! Did you have engine torque switched off? Are you going to have four engines / nozzles counter rotating to cancel out the torque?

I learned to fly the Huey by starting a mission with initial velocity 100mph and initial alt ~20000ft. (Basically this is like throwing the huey sideways from a very high altitude since the 100mph had no real impact on the rotor's lift, it just bought me some time to gain control). I then tried to get the heli under control before wiping out into the ground. After a dozen tries and some really good laughs, I got the hang of it. Spanky, I recommend you try something similar - it might help. Also, for take off I find its best to have your jstick pushed full forward and throttle ~70-80% (but no more!). I love the huey! It's one of my favourite a/c to fly. I can't wait until the next release! And remember - map "alt-W" to Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries"!

The Huey to me is easy to fly. I guess it is easy for me because I am the one that had to figure out how to make it fly the first time. I have had a bunch of practice with the Huey before we got it flying right. The other night, Jaguar and myself fixed the Huey to fly WAY better. We are fixing a few things and then we will release a new version of the Huey.

Yeah, I had myself a VTOL B-17 made out of Razor747's xb17n (B17, biplane style, with 6 engines) I just flipped the top two engines and increased the hp by a whole lot and I think I also might have made the prop size bigger. Took some tweaking, but eventually I got it so I could take off with just the top two engines and a light bomb loadout.
I'd take off pretty much straight up, then engage the 4 front engines.
One thing that was fun is to turn on just the far right engine or the far left and making it turn, or just turning on the inner two engines or outer two for decreased speed.
Trying to hover with fighters circling and watching the AI control the gunner's positions was cool too. Or hovering and bombing, as long as you're at least 5000 or so feet up.
Well I accidentally deleted it the last time I reinstalled FS, but I think I still have some screenshots, and it shouldn't be difficult to reproduce.

Looking forward to the harrier release and the next Huey release (this should be good )
