Gentlemen,
I am thinking of purchasing SDOE this weekend. I have browsed many of these posts and this may be the next step after EAW...
It seems that the program had a reputation for not being so hot out of the box. I am ready to try it with the addons, but I would like the order of loading to make it go a bit smoother...
Any advice?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Doc,

SDOE first (well that's a surprise), followed by the official patch, and then I would try Planepack5.3 (beta is available currently, full version imminent). Then if you are interested try Meatwater's soundpack and the paint schemes available at the various sites (Ground Crew is a must for organising and managing skins). You should also pick up Woodpanel's cockpits for the Spit series and P-38J.

If you're playing online you will need plane pack 5.2 instead of 5.3 to be compatible with everyone else. Also if you have the room you may want to have a seperate SDOE install for online and offline play since the cockpit addons (while they look great) will cause problems online if they slow down you frame rate below 20 (you need at least 20 at all times online). You can check your frame rate with the alt-p key.

IMO Spyder's Control Panel is a must.

Doc, where are you buying it? There have been some posts in last few days from people looking for SDOE and not finding it.

Hi Doc,

When I first purchased FSDOE, and tried to run it, and it would not run. The program would prompt me insert the CD when it was already inserted. (You may not have this problem though as only releases in some countries had this problem.)

To fix that, I downloaded "FSpatch1". After that, I installed "FSPatch150", this patch adds (among others) separate engine startup and shutdown controls on multi-engine planes so each engine can be turned on and off individually as well as being feathered.

FSPatch150 is considered the online standard when playing FS online.

It is important to install FS Patch1 (if needed) first, and then FS Patch150 after that otherwise FS may not run properly.

Both of the above patches can be obtained from my "FS Online" web site at:
http://members.xoom.com/harman_5

Go to the downloads section.

The Planepack 5.3 beta is a good add-on to install after the above patches.

You may see some links ot the planepack from users on this forum.

Hope this helps.

Note. I'm 100% positive that you only need patch 1.5 even if you have cd problems.

DOC:
Some of the planes have user created features like opening canopies. To use these you need to modify your keyboard.inp file. However, the easiest way to do this is to download the OPS Keyboard Standard package and copy the keyboard.inp file that is in that package into your main SDOE subdirectory. The download file also has a key commands card that includes a lot more key commands than are in the SDOE documentation.

Check the "downloads" forum for a link to that file.

...and don't worry! We won't tell the EAW guys that you're awol! (Great sim but I haven't flown my EAW for months now.)

I have a copy on hold at the local EB here for me. Syracuse, NY $ 29.95. I'm off for a quick bite with the wife and then the big purchase. Thanks again for the info. As usual, "boxed" sims always seem to need the real experts input to truely make them sing. I started with Janes and ws AMAZED at the graphics. The CTD's and winter got a bit tiring and so I tried my had at EAW. Seems like a fine sim with all the user created addons, but after reading a few postes about SDOE, I beleive that there are enough people here who can "adjust" the codes and engines to get more out of the game.
I'll let you all know how I make out with my install. I already have the patch saved on my HD for loading...

Install sdoe
Essentials, I guess in this order, though not necessary:
FS patch 1.5
PP5.2
SDOE Control

Good Extras:
Meatwater sound pack
PP5.3 Beta

Handy Extras:
Ground Crew 2000

then add anything your interested I guess, OPS if your into 3D design and wanna build stuff, but esentially, the above list is the way to go for a beginner with SDOE IMHO

Doc,

Once you are all up and running well with the above files, I've got some new airplanes and ground objects (mostly moving ones which the original SDOE didn't come with) that you can pick up here...

Once again, MY sincere thanks to you all! I am liking this group already.
A few quick newbie questions,
1. Is there a way to turn off the cockpit? I have been flying the 'Stang and Lightnig today and I love them!
2. What is the "slew" setup and how do I use it? I pressed "S" prior to engine start and it got really weird.
3. Can I get my in cockpit view to be slaved to my HAT? I have a MS Sidewinder Pro, (Non-FF) and I already have the profile loaded for SDOE. But when I program the Shift+Numpad+Key it doesn't work uless I actually use the keystrokes. I would like to be able to use my HAT switch to "look around" rather than quick snaps...
That's about it for now...
Thanks again in advance. It's great to be here!

Doc out...

1. No. But in maximum zoom you don't see much of it.

2. Use slew mode while in the air. Your plane will continue flying but you will be on the ground (or slightly above) and can explore by using your number keypad for direction and speed. Press S again to get back into your plane. As far as I can tell slew puts you beneath your plane so doing it while still on the ground would screw things up.

3. I also have the Sidewinder without FF. If you have the eight views programed you can pan by pressing "shift" while using the hat button. What works best is to alter the keyboard input file to view with your mouse. I believe the instructions for this are in the HDD (Handy Dandy Doc).

As a newbie you should get the HDD anyway. I haven't downloaded it in a long time but you should find it by doing a keyword search on this board. Or check downloads. Someone will probably read this and post the URL for you.

I just did a search and found this:

"You might also want the Handy Dandy Doc (HDD) and the new updated Keyboard reference. These are located at the Documentation page of the OPPs website at http://www.fshangar.com/area51/"

Good luck!

For those LOOKING to BUY SDOE, you can buy it on line at http://www.compuexpert.com/html/productinfo/fightersquadron.shtml for only &12.90 which includes the shipping and handling ! They also ship 2 day air. I bought mine from there. I had the same problem at first, I wanted it but couldn't find it anywhere in my area. I have found two sites on line that were selling it, one was $39.99 plus S&H. Then RATTLESNAKE b_a_b told me about the site above and I jumped on it.

Doc, I have the MS PPro (non FF) also, and I am using the POV hat to look around the cockpit. In the Sidewinder Profiler software I have mine set up like this:

POV/Hat
Up [SHIFT] + [8]
Up+Right [SHIFT] + [6] + [8]
...and so on

It seems to work fine but the one thing that annoys me is how slow it is, because it's digital panning. Try looking around with the mouse, you can see the difference. It would be really nice if you could get the hat to do analog instead, but I don't think it works that way. Also, it's a good thing to have Ronin's input command stuff.
I've noticed that when I press "ALT" in game, the POV toggles from panning to snap views.

If need be, I can send you my Sidewinder profile.

Hi Reaper,

thanks for the info. I think I am going to "get used to" the snap views in cockpit and keep the pan views when external. I am trying to get over the EAW view system so it'll take a few flights before I am comfortable again...I tried the pan views inside the cockpit but when in external view, I lost the panning ability. So, with the speed of the inside quick snap views, I can learn to deal with it. I tried "padlock" for the first time last night and I think I can get used to that..
I actually took off and landed TWICE without crashing in a P-51 Last night and now I am up for a simple custom mission of attacking bombers....
Thanks for the response.

Doc,

I highly recommend setting up your mouse to also pan view and zoom with the mouse buttons. For "sight-seeing" your cockpit or bomber interior it can't be beat and it gives you views and angles you can't get with just a hat pan. And it's much quicker.

P.S. Can you take off with the 109 yet? It's really a bitch.
