In Max Hastings Bomber Command, he mentions that Canadian 6 group Lancs were fitted with ventral (belly) turrets - anybody ever seen a pic of this? Would be fascinated to know what it looked like, was it a B17 style ball turret, etc?

I have. The turrent was remote and resembled a copper button with two .303's poking out. Usually the ventral turrent was ditch in favor of an extra box of Tolls and a fine china tea set for the 4 o'clock.

The Lanc was designed with a ventral turrent and delivered that way. The turret extended straight down like a cylinder and the operator sat in the plane using a periscope system to view down and out.

This was removed because of the huge reduction in speed caused when the turret was lowered.

The first sqn to experiment with a ventral turret in the Halifax was 429 Sqn. The bubble was there and they mounted a .50 cal. There was mixed reaction as to it's effectiveness. The spot where the turret was is where they ended up putting the H2S system. Hence the reason for no turret.

They debate has been whether it was detrimental to the defense of the bomber. 214 Sqn operated B17's and they removed the ball turret because they found it ineffective because they could see absolutely nothing while in the ball turret.

The Lancs did indeed have a ventral turret, but it was quickly removed. Like many similar designs, the concept of using a mirror/periscope arrangement in order to site the guns was found to be practically useless, the gunners found it almost impossible to find their targets in the site, and it was completely useless for "survalence".

As others have noted the turret and it's associated fairing was removed and simply faired over - this is the condition of the Hamilton Lanc for instance. In many other cases the existing "manhole" was used as a perfect spot for the H2S antenna, which is the bulbish protusion found at the rear of many Lancs.
