The Zepplin is about done! I'm gonna add some moring lines and a waving German flag off the stern. (it IS an AirSHIP you know) :P

Anyhow enjoy the pics and I'll post it really really soon. Thanks to DOLE for the help with the stubborn texture mapping. I had it all mapped (several hours of work) only to find it showed up all black in the game! After Dole looked at it and told me how to fix it, another several hours went by remapping (another sleepless OP night). SO, needless to say that's done but the flags on the stern (the big Swastikas) don't show up right when coming at you, or at far distances... I'm still trying to fix this). But up close and personal it looks sweet. And wow, to see it flying around an airfield, or below a low cloud cover is simply breathtaking! You'll all soon see. Oh, what's a good TNT charge for something this big?
http://hawker.webjump.com/images/Zepplin/Zepp2.jpg

cut and paste this to your address window, up through Zepp5.jpg (pic 5 is my favorite).

In case you wonder how it flys, well I have yet to be able to start a mission with it on the ground. The gear makes a breaking sound and it starts to sink into the earth. So you simply start it in a mission in flight. Flying it goes great from about 80-200 knots. I usually keep it around 110 and it just cruises beautifully. I was just in a mission and was just under the overcast clouds. WOW! I know I mentioned that already in here but I'm just emphasizing how incredible it looks. It's the most wonderous thing you'll see so far in this sim, IMHO. Back to work on it.

Pete

Superb.

I can't wait the load some Brock ammunition into my SE5a and shoot it down.

Any chance of a maltese cross on the tail fin instead of the swastika for us WW1 buffs?

Congratulations

Mr Bigglesworth

It may be pretty huge for WWI times, but sure. Just point me to that cross, either a pic on a website or email me one and I'll get one in there as well. Glad you like!

Make sure the exposivenes is rather low, up the scaling factor instead. This way it will be a huge flame/explosion but won't take out every other OpenPlane flying

Sv, could you refresh my memory on how to do that?

Also, are lines (for ropes) supported in SDOE? I had two nice moring lines and some wires that a flag was attached to, but in the game and OPS they don't show up, but in Max they looked cool.

Spanky here..

That looking great man. Now you need to find out how the shadows work. That will look way better with the proper shadows.

obExplode [lbs, [visMult] ]

Cause an explosion at my origin. lbs is the pounds of explosive force (my radius in feet if not specified). visMult (1 if not specified) is a multiplier used to scale the visual size of the explosion, but not its effect on other objects.

So just make sure you use a high visMult (try 10 maybe and go from there).

This zeppelin is getting to me. This is so cool. I want a WWI one with the propper guns/flying specs heheh. Anyone have any WWI Zepp drawings?

I'm not sure about the lines Pete - I do know they need to be polys.

Now as far as keeping it aloft, it does seem that an upward prop is in order, but how would you get this prop to not make a sound while letting the real Zepp props continue to make sound. Hmmmm....

If you put in an generic "EngineRun" sound for the Zeppelin, wouldn't all propellors make the same sound anyway- look at the Fort and the Lanc. I wouldn't think that would be a problem.

Exactly, we wouldn't want the invisable prop to make a seperate sound. Come to think about it, managing the throttle setting of the invisable prop is an issue as well. Maybe we need another approach....

If we had a wing with large surface area, built in high AOA, and an airfoil with high lift, no drag - this would result in a very slow moving object. The only problem is that if you speed up at all the Zepp will rise like hell. Any more clever ideas?

Thats a good idea SV, just make it a huge area with a level AoA. Make the airship light and the propeller very weak. You could put the airfoil on a DOF that rotates like on a gyroscope so it's always level with the horizon and you never lose lift. You could angle the stabs to counter the lift from going faster. If you did stop the thing it would still sink, but not very fast. You could phony up an unstallable airfoil so it just gradually sinks straight down.

Following someones advice the tail does have an invisible engine to help it rise, but heck it still flys low at times compared to the rest of it.

Sv, you can be sure I'll do up a nice WWI balloon for you, since you are doing that kick butt job with the WWI planes This is fun!

DOES ANYONE know how to do a decent shadow conversion, and could share it with me so I can get a huge shadow under this thing? (it'd help the dramatic effect immensely)

So that's whats left. I need to fix the shadow, recolor the engine tifs (the real one they are white) and I may color the conrol surfaces, but for now the black looks cool, so maybe not. OH, and I have to change it to a Zepp.sm instead of the B-17g, then you all can fly it.

Hey, Pete. Michael mentioned a kludge that might work for starting the flag waving automagically. Look for zero damage and send a command to the root object. That should fire off as soon as the object is created. And he thought that the command should trickle down to the flag.
