I saw an article about this on Tele the other night. They use electrical impulses to trick the inner ear into to thinking it is being subjected to accelerating and decelerating forces. I think it would work a bit like being pissed (English use of 'pissed' and it's doesn't mean annoyed) when you lie on the floor and the room spins - or does that just happen to me. If the effect is similar, count me out - that room spinning thing makes me throw up ------------------ Yardstick painted this

I cant wait to roll an aircraft over in a sim (hopefully an openplane sim - hint hint MH ) and actually feel like Im upside down. This is going to be excellent. Newbies will be getting sick at their desks IP: Logged |

This would be very cool! I too would like to see OpenPlane use this first! Now I just need to connect a large fan to my system, point it at my face, and set it to my airspeed - the wind in the wires! ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE!

haha,I've got a large burner on top of my monitor that gets hot (up into the 1000s of degrees), and will actually install a full size C-5 engine in front of that, that way I'll get the full 41,000 lbs of thrust PLUS the flames through my hair for the F-14 (in the follow view of course) IP: Logged |

Sounds fantastic but scary;Quote from the site "They should be used with care, supervision, and the understanding that readjustment afterwards is not necessarily immediate." oh boy LOL! - wonder if you get a hangover as well! IP: Logged |

I know. Remember that movie "Brainstorm" wit Christopher Walken? This reminds me of that. Only this has the sensations of movement where in the movie you could replay complete experiences. This "kinda" feels like a step in that direction. Oh man, besides jets (which would be incredible and even somewhat scary), you could have some really cool rollercoaster sims, heck you name it. At $100 bucks they oughta sell gobs of these. Just sitting here and really thinking about it though, I think I'd really start to feel sick. We'll see.

I'll probably buy one and puke all over the place and tell myself this is FUN!!!Now if they can just simulate that parachute opening and the float down to earth I'll really be getting my money's worth!!I'm a sucker for gadgets! mud IP: Logged |

What happens when your inner ear is telling your brain that you are leaning in a certain direction, but your peripheral vision (everything but the monitor screen)is telling your brain that you are not leaning? My guess is chunk blowing time! It would probably work great with "visor vision" and no visual reference to the real world. IP: Logged |

Actually no, you usually would not blow chunks from the inner telling you one thing and the eyes telling you another. This is what being dizzy is. The brain is set up to trust the inner ears definition of the world far more than the eyes - this is so we can remain upright with our eyes close or when it is too dark to see. It will be a little disconcerting at first and some may suffer from something akin to seasickness but I think for the most part people would do fine with this type of system.I have used the medical equipment they metion in the website - the stuff this is based on. It's used to test the natural equilibrium of the inner ear amongst other things and while a peculiar sensation it is not at all unpleasant to be told by your ear that you are upside down whilst the room appears to be the other way up. In fact, after a moment you begin to feel that you are the right way up and the room is wrong - like your walking on the ceiling. -Stark IP: Logged |

Thanks for your insight Stark. I'm sold!Sv - Turn out the lights? Then how do I find my beer? Let's not go too far with this realism thing On a more serious note....considering the problems SDOE has had with FF joysticks this thing could get real interesting if the feedback was out of sync.
