Spanky here...

I know this should be in off topic but no one visits there. I ask that this just stay in general for as long as its hot or a day or 2. Thanks

K as some of you guys know I'm getting read to upgrade (or should I say build my own computer as this one is borrowed)

I was shooting for an athlon 500 with a K7M but my girlfriend was cut back in hours at work and we just can't afford it now (with that new 300 watt case and all)

I have been looking at the cel line and they seem to fit the bill. I have pretty much decided on the 466mhz Fireing squad had it running at 525mhz and at that speed beating a p3 500 in some 3d (thats none SSE p3 500 I think)

My prices I have gotten have been (In Canada remember)

all cel

433 $139
466 $179
500 $239

Seeing as the 466 can go to 525 I think it just makes more sence That extra 60 plus tax(15%) is just to rich for my blood at the moment> ( and remember I still have to buy all kinds of other parts)

K so my main question is What motherboard should I use? I like asus and ALOT of people seem to be using the abit boards.
I was thinking of going with a p2 p3 board and an adapter just in case I was to go with a p3 at some point in the future.
But if there was a decent Cel board at a low price I might do that to save money.

Any way give me some ideas as i have no clue what is going on in the world of cel.

My secondary question is about ram I know the cels are still using 66mhz or maybe 75-83 for overclocking. But I was thinking of buying pc133 ram just for when I do the next upgrade. Its not that much more expensive.

REMEMBER PRICES ARE IN CANADAIN SO DON'T HAVE A HEART ATTACK hehe

My options are

2 x 64@pc100 for 119 each = 238
1 x128@pc100 for 247
1 x128@px133 for 269

I don't know about you guys but that extra $31 on top of 2 64@pc100 seems like a good deal for memory that will be at the leading edge a little longer and leave one more slot open for more ram later.

Anyways thanks for reading my novel. Any help is apriciated.

Oh almost forgot. Me and Mad Dog are both on the upgrade/build a new computer tail. This means we need parts in a bad way.

Any and all parts (yes even 3 gig hard drives and sb16s) Anyone with used parts from and upgrade or what ever. LET US KNOW PLEASE.

I build my own kit too, but I'm not as uptodate as I should be right now, thing is, I was wondering about you asking about the different kinds of RAM, tell me if I'm wrong but I think you can get the 128 PC100 which costs less, but overclock the mother board rather than the clock multiples thereby overclocking the RAM aswell, I'm fairly sure you can do this and it'd save you the cash for the 128 PC133

Asus is not the way to go unless you get the K7 I'd get tha abit for overclocking. If you want to you can buy a board with the chip on it thats already overclock thats my recommendation.

I am currently running a Abit VA6 with a slocketted 433. It is ok, but as for overclocking a PPG Celeron, stick with a PPG motherboard (socket 370 = PPG) because I can't even do 75mhz to O/C the chip. I've had good luck with my Abits(BP6 and VA6) and my Asus(P2B). The Via chipsetted motherboards have slower memory access than the BX, but don't cost as much as an MicroIntel chipsets. I paid $82US for the one I have now. What is that in Canadian - Two elk pelts, three beaver pelts, and $5,000? Anyways, if you want a temporary cheap system go with a Via 133, else go with a BX or shell out $30 more for a 820i chipset. Some of the new Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset motherboard have both slots and support 4X AGP, plus they usually have sound on board (most notably, if I remember correctly, is the DFI which has an Aureal A3D 82010 sound chip on it ala first tear Aureal chips). Most BX boards were being hocked for $110-120 at the last show I went to.

Spanky here...

Nat... I'm buying the pc133 not for overclocking (since the cels only use 66mhz) I'm buying it for future overclocking. What if the next time I upgrade that chip and board combo call for pc133 ram? Do I want to buy all new ram? I don't think so

I listed the price diff bettween pc100 and pc133 and its only $22 more for pc133.

Bomber... Yeah i'm almost for certain going with an abit BF6 or BE6-II Unless anyone else has some better ideas or bad things to tell me about those boards.

Whirlwind... I'm probly going for a slocket I don't know why your having problems but i hear good things about using a slocket for over clocking.

Anyone have any other advice? possible pitfalls? Good pages on overclocking the cel?

Abit BE6, BH6. I did love my dual socket 370 BP6 for its 4 IDE headers (2 IDE/33, 2 IDE/66). What a nice board. Damn power surge! I would avoid the 810i based MB boards because they usually don't have AGP slots and have the 750 chip built in deleivering TNT like performance.

My problem might be heat since my system temp was coasting around 110F at last check.

Whirl... Yeah i'm getting a bx board i'm pretty sure.

ALSO I don't know whats going on with computers I can't see why you would be having a problem running at 110f I put a temp monitor inside my playstation runs at 120f at its hottest with no problems at all. And thats in the winter imagine with a 30 cel (not sure what that is in F) room temp?

It runs flawlessly so why can't a state of the art(read not 5 years old with no heat sink or fan) P3 chip run at that temp with no problems?

If you can snap up a Cel300a they usually will overclock to 450 with 100mhz bus. They're getting hard to find but I think I'd rather have a 450 with 100mhz bus than a 500 with 66mhz bus.

Overclocking the bus to strange values like 70, 75mhz etc will usually cause some card in your computer to object it's not a good solution.

Cel300a were selling for $120 about six months ago..

Tail yeah i would have considered a cel 300 but i don't think they are around any more
If you want to upgrade and sell me your i would be into that

I hear what you are saying about the 100mhz bus but it doesn't seem to be as big of a deal as some people say. Firing squads review on the 466 had it running at 525 and keeping up with a p3 500 thats nothing to sneeze at in my view even with a 66 mhz bus it was keeping up.

That would suit me just fine

Sorry Spanky the wife's got dibs on it = )

Make sure to back up your hard drive when you get your chip I've heard of hard drives getting corrupted when you set the bus speed funny.
