WOW! This rocks! It's pitch black in my room and I loaded up the Data5.par file and did what the readme said to do. I got into a mission with the latest SDOE beta and wow, I honestly felt like I was sitting on a dark, cold, airfield out in the middle of nowhere, worried what was lurking in the black ahead. (no kidding... it actually gave me the chills it looked so good). Of course use Spyder (Spider?)'s SDOE control to get the ambiant lighting right like the readme says.

Michael and Inertia crew... you guys MUST exploit this is the next sim you do! It add's an unbelieveable amount of coolness! One thing that I really noticed is that flying low and even on takeoff/landing roll is that you can't see too far ahead of you, so it seems out of NOWHERE details on the ground go screaming past your cockpit with such beauty and speed. The sense of speed is tremedous, much more than daytime flight during lowlevel. I'm so impressed with Poodles work on this... GREAT JOB MAN! Before I got it I was thinking, now how fun would dark flight be... and I almost didn't get it. But I thought, he worked hard on it so I'll give him that much and try it. I'm very glad I did!

Imagine that beautiful blackness with some realtime lights of all sorts of colors (so us jet jockeys can build, eh hem, modern airfields someday :P ) and it would be killer. (The runway lighting in A-10 Cuba at Gitmo comes to mind as something to try and recreate Mike, I can't get enough of that).

So, my vote is A1 for this addition and get some lights and ALL dark maps soon! They rule! Bigtime fun. (3 cheers for Poodle!)

Hi Pete,

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you like it a lot. I think it really adds to the sim too. Especially the first time I played it, the darkness, it really makes it creepy.

I've also been thinking of add-ons. We could change the house textures with lighting effects, and I thought placing burning barrels in front of the airstrips. Also more night fighters would be cool (a Beaufighter, P-61 and Bf110 would be nice to start with) and anyhting else we can think of.

I'll keep you guys posted on any updates, and help is always appreciated.

Cu,
Poodle

Poodle,

With the ambient light set low, would bright textures still show up? So if I splash a house with light from a nearby lamp, will you be able to see it better, or will it look real dim?

I think if we wan't to make lighting effects on houses we should make DoverNight really independant of the AmbientLight settings. Cause you can lighten a texture up now, but the AmbientLight will make it dark again.
I think in the future we should maybe change all the textures and make a lot of new sm files for all the new night buildings and night vehicles. Would mean a lot of work, and a bigger download, but also no need of changing the light settings and better light effects.
We can try making a house skin a lot brighter and see what happens together with changing the AmbientLight. It will lighten up, but as you said it might look real dim.
