An IRC channel? Would be a nice way to get together when were working on projects. I'd also like to use it for chat sessions with MH and crew if they'd be so kind as to participate. And eventually a bot to automagically give a person the latest patches/updates they need.

If anyone is interested just say so and I'll get the channel registered.

I would be in favor of it. I think it would be nice to have a place where we could go to just discuss things in real time and meet other new SDOEers. Count me in.

Sounds interesting. Given how small the community is it would appear that it's use would be minimal. Prime example is the ICQ list. I rarely see more than 4 guys active at a time and it's alway the same 4.

Yeah the chat in ICQ would work great if more people would just join the list. I find its not used anywhere close to as much as i had hoped. I'm not sure why its not. But its still great to have.

Yeah but IRC has a lot of advantages over ICQ imho. First of all it doesnt take up 10MB of RAM like ICQ. Also I hate the fact that you have to register for ICQ. I prefer anomynity whenever possible. Anyway, I have the channel #openplane registered on Newnet (www.newnet.net) for those interested. Lets give it a while and see what happens.

10 megs of ram? i never noticed that. Not that i ever looked.

IRC doesn't tell you when friends are online. ITs just chat

Icq is WAY more then chat. but they both have there uses.

ICQ's strength is in instant messaging
Its chatting leaves much to be desired imo.
You can get scripts to tell you when friends are online if you like, but thats not really its purpose IMO

you can one of many clients at http://www.mirc.co.uk

To be honest I don't think I'd be likely to keep both ICQ and IRC running. I use ICQ all the time.

How bout a chat page here on the fs site? Seems to be alot of traffic on the forum at times. Posts coming in one after the other. Would be pretty convenient to surf over to a chat page to see if anyone else is around.

Cya up there,
Apeboy

When I'm available on ICQ all my other contacts can see it as well and often interrupt.

I prefer Kali for av-chat - bonus being its simple from there to find a fast server and fly whatever.

Roadtoad if you don't want to talk to anyone just mark yourself as unavailable or occupied. You won't even get beeped when messages come in. If someone is particularly annoying right click on them and select alert accept modes then invisible to user. They won't even be able to tell you are online.

One drawback to both ICQ and IRC is that there's no history generated.

On the board, the messages are saved and new people can search for the information they need (although many don't )

With either ICQ or IRC you [i]can[/] save a chat log, but I would expect that 99% of the time people would forget to do so and the conversation would be lost.

I hear what your saying MH but a team just can't work by passing messages back and forth on a message board or through the mailing list.

If i was in a team i would refuse to work through that. ITs too slow.

Roger wilco would be the best way with ICQ and IRC coming in second choices.

Ok, for TEAM projects I have found the BEST thing to use is roger wilco. Me and razor used it on the Huey and basically cut the development time in half! It's like having the person sitting right next to you, halping you through OP. It's great.

I would be up fo a chat room here. Not for projects though, just to chat.
