I read and sympathized with Stardog's post below. I too don't want my words to come across as a flame. It has been awhile. I still can't fly with a MSFF stick, I've tweaked it till I'm blue in the face with the util over at stickworks. No matter what you do you wind up sacrificing one thing over another. If you reduce that infernal thrashing you have very little control surface deflection. I would love to take a more active role in testing but I can't give a fair report due to a stick that cannot operate properly. I digress, to my point.

I understand MH and others at inertia are doing work on the side while they are chugging along on projects x and y. My point is their success is, in large part, hinges on the success of SDOE. Most of us in here have stuck with this sim and understand the ongoing improvements and what is to come. I don't think I'd be going too far out on a limb to say there is a substantial number of SDOE owners out there who are unaware of this board and even more who have long removed it from their HD after being sorely disappointed upon it's release. Any release from people who are seen as the ones who gave them SDOE would not give them that urge to run out and buy their new release. Yes, I know it was Activision who was responsible for the state of SDOE when it was released but I doubt any gaming mag or consumer will bother seperating that issue. The fact of the matter is when MH stepped up to the plate and did the right thing he pretty much made himself the frontman for SDOE.

I have directed alot of people here from WB and AH after seeing SDOE slammed for all of it's bugs. From what I gather in discussions I've had with other players any release from inertia will be judged on the state of SDOE. I hope it's demons are exercised by the time a new release comes out so we can spread the word that even though SDOE stumbled out of the box, they got it right and to prove it go download the patch(s) and the add-ons from the player community.

Now, to prove the value of this opinion. Print it out, take it, and 89 cents to your local McDonalds. Give them the 89 cents and the printed copy of this post and they will give you a cup of coffee

I would disagree here. SDOE will continue to gain popularity, as nothing comes along to replace it, but it will never be a runaway hit like EAW... it's too late for that, even if it were patched to perfection. It's very hard to get people excited about a sim that is old and getting older. There is, however, a big chance that the next Openplane based sim will be a big hit as long as it doesn't have big controversies like SDOE did when it came out. I think a brand new sim is exactly what Openplane needs to gain critical mass. Naturally, SDOE will benefit from the work that's being done on the next Openplane sim since it's cut from the same cloth, but I don't think SDOE should be the priority.

JT,

Good points, however I'm not trying to re-establish SDOE as a "new" sim nor am I trying to get SDOE bumped up to number one on the priority list, just a notch or two. I believe the reputation of SDOE will linger and have an effect on future developments unless it's bugs are addressed. Hence the Edsel reference, they sold a lemon and no matter what they tried to do, people were to gunshy to try it again. To continue the automobile analogy: I drive a Nissan Pathfinder, it has been recalled a couple of times. If I had to pay for the repairs it would easily cost me over a grand. If I had to shell out that kind of money I would not even consider buying another Nissan product, however, being they admitted there were defects and made it right I have a different attitude.

The readers of this board understand that inertia is in the process of recalling and repairing SDOE but the vast majority needed to bring openplane to critical mass never recieved their recall notice. They are still out there feeling they got hosed for 50 bucks. Before you ask them for another 50 it sure would be nice to have something to fall back on ie. fixing the original.

Spanky here..

All I can say is the state of SDOE at release and the state of SDOE at the time of inertias next release will have a direct impact on the success and excitement of the next game.

If the fundemental problems of SDOE are not fixed then the next game won't have an easy time in this harsh world.

Read my post in flame wars from a while back (maybe even on the ez board) for further insight.

Don't worry all the demons are in training and will be fully fit in time

I have a rather disturbing image in my mind of a Clive Barker creation doing aerobics in a leotard.

I just found this thread and also feel hosed for the 50 I spent and how long I have dealt with the crap gameplay. Yes this does sound harsh but when a joystick that cost 120 bucks cannot play on it yet all other games I have no problems yes I also feel like bitching and whining! Unfortunatly I bought the game from 'Comp USA' or is that incompetent along with 20 for the brady games strategy guide to a grand total of 70 bucks. And we all know there policy on software returns.

I paid $35 for this game and got a wingman extreme joystick for another $30. I'm playing the hell out of this game with very few problems. A lot of guys are spending lots of money and feeling "hosed". Shop around man. These guys are giving us a lot of cool options and follow ups that other sims just don't have. The game just keeps getting better. I don't feel hosed at all.

Lets be honest about it, if SDOE ha've been shipped with only half the improvements in it that have been made here, most ppl would've loved the game. On it's release it was crap, I don't mind being blunt because it is quiet simply true when you compair it to other sims being released around the same time. On the other hand, I now believe it to be the best flight sim available, and doubt very much that B17II will be better than this.

Open Plane was only a saviour to this game in our eyes i.e. the ppl on this board, because I and many others don't have a clue about Open Plane, can't build addons etc, so effectivley it was useless having it, so what happend, ppl bought the game, fly it for a week or so, decided that that was all there was to it and deleted it and put it on the shelf, all because SDOE wasn't fully finished to the best of the games ability.

In some way I have to agree that the nest games success will hinge (or has hinged) on SDOE, but on the other hand, good game reviews on the TV etc really do play a big part.. for instance UnReal, well it looked great in reviews etc, but to be honest, I aint all tha happy with it, to me Doom was far more fun, and much more difficult, and Quake 1 & 2 looked better.

The reviews will count ultimately I think, I just hope the reviews truely show us the game or what to expect.

oh.. and I agree whole heartedly about SDOE and expensive sticks, I find my $20 stick is awsome with SDOE, but the Wingman Interceptor really sucks, but having used both, thats down to the stick and it's control systemas far as SDOE goes, the good old simple rock and roll sticks work far better because the stick is inherantly more desicive, and less effected by small "twitches" through the stick

Ya know.. I really don't get it... perhaps you aren't doing the online gameing like most of us here are.. but I have to say.... I had a thrustmaster rig that cost me 240 dollars, plus a ch pro pedals set, and they worked perfectly. Perhaps FF code isn't right in this game... But big bloody deal.. I mean honestly, You can online play and say the gameplay is crap? Perhaps you like other games where your electric motor in a box gives you some tactile sensation of something that almost resembles the feeling of force on the stick?
I personally see the game as how it flies. And I love the way this game flies. I love the new planes and the new FM's that are coming out. I love the fact that this game will continue to offer us new avenues of flight where other games are limited to what you got... and thats it. Period.
I know that MH has been working on the patch for Us in his own time. Without pay to help combat these problems. I know also that it has taken a long time and will still probably take quite awhile for the patch to come out. But ya know what? Even with the bugs, I love this game and feel I got my money's worth. Why? Becuase with the hard work of some of the people in this community, I now not only own a very nice and increasingly accurate WW2 sim, but now I also own a Fantastic WW1 sim, and I am seeing a nice test bed for some modern AC as well. This sim is worth the money for it's expansion capacity. And you don't even have to do anything but sit on your butt and say thanks every so often.... better then most games and "Official expansion packs" that you pay another 15-20 dollars for. And you couldn't even test the planes before hand to let the designer know about a flaw in the AC or FM or DM of the planes being released.
BTW, I am using a Madcatz Panther DX with my Pro Pedals plugged into it and the stick in the USB and this works perfect... so perhaps you should also feel gipped by the Stick manufacturer.....

I guess I'm just lucky or something. I use about as cheap a stick as you can get and still have rudder, the MS Sidewinder 3d. I bought this game the INSTANT it came out - at full retail. I even upgraded my computer just to do it. Fortunately I got all the parts for the upgrade in exchange for some overtime work. The game has worked pretty much up to snuff for me from the get-go, known problems with target bugs etc aside.

I feel like I should tell you guys to break down and get a Sidewinder, but heck, play with whatever floats yer boat and have fun. The little amount of money this stick would cost sounds like it might save you fellas a bunch of frustration, which IMO is well worth it.
