I can fully understand MH's concern for a viable bussiness, one thats profitable enough to survive and provide stability.

IMO,I'd side with TS's line of thinking with
updates WE pay for.Maybe twice a year updates to the game's core code.Charge $40 or so.

The community can however provide aircraft, ground objects, sounds, skins, and missions.

I started 8+ years ago paying the Genie Network (Air Warrior Dos Online)over $6 an hour to play.Incredible!

(Afterwards)Warbirds was $3 then down to $1.50/hour.

Still each has tons of problems and many folks come in and out the rotating door. Not many still fly that first started the community. Not much fun to look foward to.

I believed that I had struck Gold when I found SDoE with its "make a game for FREE" format.I'm now second guessing myself.

I for one will not pay to play again. After 8 years of it,I've had quite enough.....thanks.

I would however pay, up to twice a year, for updates.

I think other good ideas for the next openplane sim would be...
A.) Find a way to put at least 32 people on an arena.
B.) Make the arena persistant ala Aces High

Falck... I agree with ya on the 32 people however I don't think its a big issue. We rarely see more than 12 in an online game now in SDoE. After all my years in the " massively multiplayer Sims" I've realized one thing, hoards of people don't make the experience, however its the Quality that makes it.

Siggi, has identified the Big Problem with the
waste a pilot and his aircraft mentality. However his "pay per plane" idea would only include himself and a small handful of others to play against.(sorry but its the truth)

I'm convinced that we need a Limited Resource Engagement.

Create a game like you do currently,BUT,have the ability to store extra aircraft on the ground, either in the open or under hangers,or
on the Carrier deck. And have the ability to
to regenerate into them.(not one life, but not
endless like Warbirds/Air Warrior)but rather
a happy medium.

This would place a stronger value on your each aircraft you have, including the one your flying and protecting those you have left.

Cap,ground strikes, and Air to Air combat NOW
take on a whole new meaning.

My 2 cents

What we're talking about here is largely academic for the time being. Almost nobody here in the UK has access to high-speed connections which means online play is a hit and miss experience at the best of times.
The Yanks have the connection speeds but PC hardware is not yet ready to cope with large numbers of a/c of the graphical quality being shown by B17-2.
Until those two issues are resolved no company is going to risk getting it's fingers burned.
I reckon another five years until we can really get at it. Until then we can monkey around with what we have, keep in training and continue to dream.

Heya,

Just my opinion. I will not pay to play any game. Not saying that my opinion will not ever change, but right now I havnt been so excited about any game to want to pay by the hour. Or by plane, seeing how I lose plane quite often

What I would do is like Tail, pay for ongoing ugrades and improvemments. Whether its planes, terrain, "dynamic online campaigns" (which would be very cool) or what ever. I think if, not just say Inertia but any game company worked on the premis of we make our money from updates and addons, rather than well lets make a few quick bucks and then move on to the next attitude, that overall we will get better games and support from these companys.

Just my 2 cents, anyone got change for a buck?

Spanky here...

I definatly see a need to make people take care of their online pilot/plane

but paying won't do it for me

i just won't play then

i just can't afford to pay to play and i don't have a credit card to do it anyway

I know you could send in a check or something but i'm just not into paying to play

i would how ever maybe pay per year or even better

$15-$30 for an upgrade/online licence every couple months

plus i'm in canada

it might be 1 doller a plane in the US
but thats more like 1.50 or more canadian
over a year that really adds up

I don't pay to play anything, except to buy my games and other software. What would be the point in an online version of SDOE when we can't convince a majority of people that there are good people still making it a viable flight sim (until OpenWorld emerges ).
