Guys, I have 3D Studio Max2, can anyone mail me with some "easy" steps to editing/making models with this, I've looked at the prog a few times since I got it burnt to CD by a friend, but it's a lil much for me to get my head round on my own, so if anyone could mail me any steps/tips then I can get into seeing what I can add to "our world"

Thanks guys

You know thats illegal. In the long run it drives up the cost of software to the end user. Meaning you and I

I'd say the first step is to get comfortable with the basic Max functions. To do this, you might need to get a manual. Go to the bookstore and try to find something very basic. Make sure it has lots of tutorials. Max can look very cryptic to anyone who isn't familiar with it. A lot of the tools are represented as icons or are hidden since most of the screen space is devoted to the viewports. You'd never know some stuff was there unless someone tells your. There are also a lot of little stumbling blocks which can become insurmountable walls of difficulty if you don't have a guide. Then comes the fact that you're trying to build something for a game that has it's own considerations.
Anyway, you will also need to get familiar with this place in case you aren't already....

http://support.discreet.com

This is a forum where you can discuss almost anything about 3ds Max or modeling in general. It's best to view this messageboard with Outlook. It's very slow (there's something wrong with their server) if you access it through your web browser.
Finally, you will need tools which allow you to bring models from OP Studio into Max. For that you will need the OBJ2MAX plugin. That is available here....

http://www.habware.at/duck2.htm

While you're there, also get the MAX2OBJ plugin. That will allow you to bring models from Max into OP Studio.
Anyway, that's a very basic synopsis. I know I'm being vague, but it would take me hours to explain everything. It's much more efficient if you do some experimenting on your own now and ask specific questions when you get stuck.... the more specific, the more likely you will get a response.

By the way, if you post at the Discreet forum, you may want to skip the part about the burnt CD. ;-)

go to school on JT's last post - if you're blatant on that board you won't get answers just moralizing on what a dirtball they think you are - and since that forum is owned by the max people, you might get more of an answer than you want.
do a search on max tutorials and order the highest user rated book on amazon.com

Imagine my reaction when I finished flying one night and a user I had been flying with ICQed me and told me he was in the process of burning a copy of SDOE :-/ He used the "I can't afford all the games I want to play" excuse.

This was early last summer. He didn't know I was involved in making SDOE when he started bragging. I tried to explain why he might want to pay for the game, but I don't think I made an impression.

Having just added to the thread drift, now might be a good time to let this one die. I can see it evoking strong reactions and erupting into a flame war

I'm gonna say one more thing bout this, then I'll consider the topic dead... I didn't ask for 3DSM, it was given to me, I've had it for about a year and still don't know how to use the damn thing, believe me, I would never have gone out and bought it, I considered it then and still do now, a favor, it was nice of him to give me the prog, but as I said, I would never have bought the thing cause as you see, I don't know how to use it... so on those grounds effectivly no-one has been deprived of any money. I'll put it another way, awhile back I downloaded a cacked game for the net that I really wanted, played it for about 4 days, then went out and bought the game at the store.. no I didn't really have to, but I liked the game and wanted to be able to get the support for it that you can't have from cracked games, so I bought it, the company got the money for the game cause I liked it and wanted it, 3DSM is a pain in the ass, and really has no use to me unless it's to learn how to make things for SDOE.. which looks very doubtful.. lol

Think that kinda covers the thing about me depriving large and very profitable software companys of any money

Well, yeah, Max is a pain in the ass, but so is Falcon 4.0 if you don't have the manual. Don't get discouraged yet. Max is a very intelligently designed piece of software. More than that, though, it's extremely versatile when it comes to generating and manipulating shapes. But, with that versatility comes complexity.
I learned Max on my own, but it took 5 large books (well, only 2 were necessary, but the others were helpful) and a lot of time. I don't want to sound like a salesman for Discreet, but now that I'm comfortable with Max, I can say that there's really nothing about it that bugs me.

thanks JT, I know what this prog can do.. we've all seen Twister etc, that were made using Max... I keep lookin at it to see what can be done, one day I'll work it out.. lol, I'd just like to contribute as much as I can, coloring skins etc is fun.. but not "serious" enough.

Thanks JT, I'll stick at it.. lol
