There was a facinating and moving programme on Channel 4 (UK) this evening. Time Team's archaelogical dig on Paul Klipsch's Mk.I Spitfire P97373 that was shot down by a Bf110 on 23rd of May, 1940.

To see the remains of a 30ft Spitfire compressed into 5ft after a near vertical 400MPH crash is beyond belief.

A very interesting and also very sad story.

You can read about it at Channel 4 and follow the Wierre-Effroy link.

Also in the Glasgow Herald on friday . A restored Hurricane P3351 made its second maiden flight in New Zealand after a 5 year restoration by Tin Wallis, P3351 was a BOB survivor and is one of only 7 in airworthy condition. The Last of the Few .

Semmern: You are probably right about the code. I took the number from the details in the Radio Times that listed the programme. Is there a site you can track all know crashes like this one?

Siggi: It will be repeated again sometime I am sure. Sky Digital regularly run episodes of Time Team, but this series has only just started (that was the second episode). Like the signature - lol

P9373 is the correct number. There is an article is FlyPast magazine on the excavation.
