I was recently reading some books about American aces in WW II and I was wondering who everyone thought was the best American Ace of WW II, not necessarily the highest scoring, and why?IP: Logged |

Richard Bong was the to scorer, with 40 kills, but I like "Pappy" Boyington the best.Speaking of aces, who do you think is the best British ace??? I think it's Robert Stanford Tuck, who scored 29 kills before he was shot down on the 28th of January 1942. I've read his book "Fly for Your Life" over and over. He was regarded as the best British ace, even though he wasn't the top scorer. Why not make a paint scheme of his plane "RS-T"?????????? ------------------ We shall fight on the beaches, in the streets, on the sea, in the air.... and in SDOE!!! IP: Logged |

Hippie and Razer,I totally agree with you both. With that in mind is there any chance one of you would be willing to pick up the F4U project? I would be willing to help as much as possible. The lasted F4U beta does fly but needs much work, as you know Razer. Condor out ------------------

Well there is a few Pacific planes in the works for the upcoming contest. But sadly none are the corsair. I would like to do one later but time will tell. It's current only 8 th on my list of planes. Hehe reports of the demise of Hippie's Corsair are...greatly exaggerated. The "second team" is on the job (and a mighty small team it is too). I might post a pic if I can figure out this web-posting stuff. So far what I've done is take a Mustang, graft Hippie's Corsair parts on it, reshape a lot of them working from 3-views, added in the split flaps, put the guns where they belong, put the pilot and instruments where they belong, adjust the CGs to fit the new shapes, play with engine HP a bit, and tweak the landing gear a little (can't get the wheels to quit wobbling tho) She makes about 415 on the deck, which is about right I think, and looks pretty Corsairish (especially with the gear and flaps hanging). Haven't tried any texturing yet--saving that for last. It's in the contest--cautiously optimistic about having it finished. Basic flyable plane is about 85% done. Plan is to have folding wings, arrestor hook, and sliding canopy by end of the month, with flight model tweaks and texture stuff in Feb. Oh, yeah, back on topic--I'd have to go with Gabreski I think. Killing that many 190s and 109s in a Jug, and then getting kills in jets as well...pretty impressive. ------------------ --jedi-- [This message has been edited by jedi (edited 01-12-2000).] IP: Logged |

Doolittle, he wasn't an ace (best of my knowledge, which isn't much) but he sure did help turn the war around for America. He had the best big 'little' victory for America in the war. He dashed the myth of the invincible Japan and took the first steps to taking the war to the enemy.IP: Logged |

As for Pappy Boyington, does any remember the Baa Baa Black Sheep show from the 70's? I watched that show all the time when I was a kid. Is it in re-runs at all?[This message has been edited by robert s (edited 01-12-2000).] IP: Logged |

robert s,I never missed an episode. I haven't seen any in reruns for quite a awhile. Every so often I see the pilot (as in TV pilot ) movie shown, it was called "Black Sheep Squadron". It tells how he formed the squadron. A little side note: I have an autographed copy of Pappy Boyington's biography "Baa Baa Black Sheep." IP: Logged |

I was curious about what people thought about Cmdr David McCampbell with 34 air to air kills and 24 ground kills in one single tour. He also had 16 of those air to air kills in two missions. He was awarded Medal of Honor. Also what about Lt Robert M. "Butcher Bob" Hansen, USMC who had 20 air to air kills in 25 days before he was killed while strafing. He also was awarded Medal of Honor. He flew Corsairs. Does anyone know where I can get detailed info on these guys? Also is it possible to create/get skins of their planes or any of the other aces?IP: Logged |

Back on British Aces, how about Douglas Bader (excellent read - Reach for the Sky). He had around 15 - 20 kills I think, also had Johnny Johnson in his squadron for awhile when he was a newbie. Oh yeah, he also had no legs!!! Lost em before the war and flew with some very uncomfortable 'tin' legs. Now that's determination! p.s. for good info on American Aces, I'm reading a book; Aces against Japan, pretty good read, lots of Aces to choose from. Cheers, -=BAB=- Marvin IP: Logged |

I met Gene Valencia USN (28 kills i think) at a party in LA 30 years ago - he gets my vote - not because he was some blazin' ace, as much as he was a life-of-the-party kind of guy who could drink anyone under.IP: Logged |

Jeeve's, I'm not back, I'm bored . Pappy got shot down in '44 (?) and spent the rest or most of the rest of the war as a POW. I'd not give aces who shot more aircraft on the ground that in the air any credit to speak of. What challenge is their in shooting a barn? I wonder how many Marauder aces there were? IP: Logged |
