I set aside the F-15 to work on another one, my favorite... http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/F14_1.jpg http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/F14_2.jpg http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/F14_3.jpg http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/F14_4.jpg http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/Newest%20Jet.jpg As you can see wing sweep works. Control gets tricky but hopefully after more time it'll be all good. IP: Logged |

Darn cheap sites... you need to cut and paste the url. Sorry about that.Or try it from here... http://members.xoom.com/hawkersop/images/ Again this is a plane that I really like, and that's my reason behind building it. I love to see cool planes in SDOE. I started this one today around 5:00PM, and rapidly got to the point you see in the pics, using my F-15 as a template. For those that like/want these, don't worry, you'll get them soon enough. I have a plan. Tonight and tomorrow I'll start texture mapping this. Hope some of you like it. It may or may not be a contest bird.

Does the wing sweep? Does this affect FM? Does SDOE model wing sweep? I guess the airpoint will move back but other than that? Do the little front winglets slide out? Great work Pete, so cool! ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE! IP: Logged |

The wings do sweep (see the pics, taken in series). Yes the model and air pt's move as well. Flight model is affected by this! For now though it gets kinda wierd when they are swepted back. Gets tough to control. Luckily though the AI only flys with them swept forward and so do a good job flying. The winglet things will work, just as soon as I put them in. I thought out the wing sweep dofs and pivot points in my head, did it in OPS, and it was perfect the first time (this REALLY surprised me that it worked as I thought it should/would/could ) OpenPlane is soooooo cool. Btw, if any of you are brand new to airplanes, especially F-14's, this plane is nicknamed the Tomcat. And another variation that was intended for mud-moving (ground attack) is known as the Bombcat. I haven't decided which varient this will be yet, but most likely a later one, as opposed to say, an A-model. Final note, framerates with this go from 60-90 fps! Keeping poly count way way down on this one as much as possible. [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 01-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

I think the game engine would need some modifying first. Mainly for things like, a burner sound and burner textures. Raising the thrust to burner levels isn't a problem though (at least I don't think so for now).It happened again! I just spent the entire night, and I mean night (it's now 7:00AM) flying this thing! Man is it fun! Can't wait to pass it around to the lot of ya [This message has been edited by Pete Hawk (edited 01-09-2000).] IP: Logged |

Pete, Looks great! Just two questions, though...1. It looks like you lost smoothing on the nose and canopy of the Tomcat. Any idea what happened? 2. How do you work so darn fast? grrr :-)

JT,One thing I seem to be running up against lately (using smoothing) is this very bad shadowing/flashiness of some parts when flying. I tried one of RoadToads ideas in Nendo, hardening the edges of a part and then export it, smooth it out in Max, and then import it with OPS into the SM file, but sometimes it doesn't come out right. Just imagine the plane in an aileron roll and certain poly's flash light and dark... it's driving me nuts!! Is there a rock solid way to fix this? JT, I've ICQ'd you recently but I never heard back. I'd love to go over some of this with you if you have a chance. 19597122 is my ICQ. Working fast... well, it's easy when the plane you are working on is similar to another one you've already done. Thats really where all the speed comes in. Plus Sv's tutorials have helped me immensely on the dof editing. Before that was my worst nightmare! IP: Logged |

Pete,>One thing I seem to be running up against lately (using smoothing) is this very bad shadowing/flashiness of some parts when flying. Hmm.... I've seen this before. I'll bet the vertex normals of the parts in question were lost. I remember that happening to a model I was working on a while back. Open the LOD files of the erroneous parts and look at the vertex normals. The other possibility is that you need to simply weld vertices. Have you done that? >JT, I've ICQ'd you recently but I never heard back.
Hey, just email me. I haven't used ICQ in a long time. jtrivelli@adelphia.net

This is the same thing ( I think ) that I was talking to you about the other day. It has something to do with MAX2OBJ, or MAX iself, exporting normals longer or shorter than unit length. The OPS B1.1.1 I just releasedfixes this up, and it works fine for all of the instances of the excessive shadowing I had. Bryan
P.S Isn't this OpenPlane thing great! never designed for swing wings or helicopters but it inheriantly handles it! I wonder what other little treats will surface! I dallied with the idea of doing the Tornado (which is another swing wing) just to see if it would work.

Bryan and JT, check your email Maybe between the three of us we can fix the canopy thing. I'm not having any luck with it. Thanks. IP: Logged |

Pete - saw your mention of my nendo export trick .. seem to have more luck exporting to truespace4 and fixing normals there than with max - just downloaded Bryan's new max script, however, so his note that this fixes those slightly offset verts looks promising.IP: Logged |
