I bouught my PC one year ago. It's a Packard Bell PII 350 MHz, 64MB SDRAM, 32x CD-Rom, DVD-player, and an ATI 3D Rage Pro. I'm not at all pleased with it's performance. An example: I installed Flight Simulator 98 at my friend's computer. I put the Dynamic Scenery, Scenery Complexity and everything on full. His framerate was lying at 30-50. He's got a PII 233 MHz, 32MB RAM. I'm getting MAX 25 FPS!!! SDOE also runs at about 30-40 FPS at my friends computer, and maximum of 25 at mine. Hmmmmm... Weird, isn't it???? Are there anyone that can help me? Any Bill Gates juniors out there, or just anybody who knows what may be wrong???? There are also a lot of other things about my PC, but there are too many things to mention. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!

The first thing you want to do is take that ATI card out and throw it as far as you can. Then get a Voodoo 3000 or 3500 and try it. I think you will be impressed.

Adding Ram is always a good idea in your situation. And keep your HD as clean as possible.

I don't want to be a smart ass but on your next computer, I would stear clear of Packard Bell, HP, Compaq, and brands of that sort. I have a brother-in-law that works for Compaq and I won't even get one from him at an emlpoyee discount. I just don't think they are up to snuff as it were. Building your own would be my advice.

Just my opinion,
ICQ me if I can help in the other areas.

You might also verify that you've got PC 100 memory or the bus speeds of your board. Its most likely just the video card, but you might also be chocking on a slow set of ram.

You need to establish exactly what hardware is in your PC.
Motherboard.
CPU
RAM
Graphics Card
Sound Card
Hard Drive
DVD/CD Rom Drive

These are speed-related components. Other performance related factors are bus-speed, RAM type etc.

If you had top-spec everything, except for a shite motherboard, you'd have a shite performance. EVERYTHING has to be top-spec, because the system is as fast as it's crappiest component. Some sound cards use very little CPU resources, others hammer the CPU...choose the sound card carefully, it's not always the brand-name expensive ones that give the best performance. Ditto graphics cards.
Yes, either build your own system or buy one that needs only a little improvement.

rgr that on the Packard Bell. What settings do you and your have on in sdoe? Is the fog all the way out to 30 miles? If so bring it in to 5 miles, what about the clouds? Turn them off if you got them on. I know it is nice to have the eye candy but you got to ask yourself, candy and chunk, or not so much candy and no chunk? How long are you going to keep your pc? If not too long, you might do better if you go to a TNT2, because the prices have dropped to under $100 (here in the USA), the Voodoo 3000 is good but its more money. I don't know how it is over the big pond but go to www.pricewatch.com (you most likely can not order but it never hurts to look) and check the prices, again always do your homework on everything (companys, products, are they going to screw you, ect) and if you get a new card, is your system going to be faster? Make sure you check out your pc first before you give someone your money. I hope this helps some.
Himdog out.

Man, I had an ATI card and it frekin SUCKS! For instance, the smoke didn't cleany dissipate. It was just cut off. and my frame rates were PITS! 30 at best. I then bought a Voodoo Banshee and it was like I had a new game. The FPS jumped to 55-60!! What more can you ask for... I think I payed around 200 CDN for the vid card.... Not much money, big I improvement (I thought so anyways).

I'm considering to buy a new card, and expand my hard disk. But a graphics card is extremely expensive here in Norway, (how muck is one in the UK or US?) and I've only got limited money resources. On top of all that, my father doesn't allow me to tinker with my computer. But I'll see if I can discard the ATI. My fiends uncle is building computers, so I think I can ask him!!! I'll check if all my settings are on full. Thanks folks. See ya.

Take a look around Simply Computers or Insight UK to get some idea of prices in sterling.
