There has been alot of discussion lately over the crash to desktop bug. I have never until recently experienced this bug. Maybe what I found relates to online as well, I do not know for sure. I have still never experienced this bug online.
I recently created a Dover mission to escort a lone b17 at 40k and low on fuel(10 gallons), ok very low on fuel, back to base. 2 51's escort the b17 and 2 fw's are attacking it. Anywhere up to 2 minutes into the mission I always get the crash to desktop. The interesting thing is when I change the fuel level in the b17 to 200 gallons(ie enough fuel to land under power), the desktop crash doesn't happen any more. I have not played this mission online yet. I am hoping some of the curious and ambitious in our community will try to recreate this mission and see if they get a similar desktop crash. I am using a 16meg voodoo 3000 video card and I get the crash using glide and d3d as well. It also does not matter if I use SDOE version 1.5 or if I use the lastest version of the 1.5.1 beta patch from Mike Harrison.
With feedback from everyone I would like to narrow down the possible causes:
1) Does it only happen in Dover?
2) Does it only happen with a B17?
3) Does it only happen with a single bomber.
4) Does it only happen with high altitude missions?
5) Does it only happen when the B17 has run out of fuel and tries to evade the attacking fw's?
Any input would be extremely appreciated. Again this may be a total wild goose chase but the possibility of identifying the desktop crash is worth a few minutes of testing. I will continue my testing and update this post with any news.
I tried to email the exact mission to Mike Harrison this morning but I see the mission file did not attach properly to the email I sent him. (Sorry Mike). I will send it again tonight. Once he gets it and if their is any interest, maybe Mike could post in the download section for anyone to test out the mission. Please respond in this thread if you would like to have the mission available for download.
Take care,
Condor out
