Is there anyway to just ignore the boundaries in the theaters? In other words when you fly on a northerly heading and fly past the northern limit of the map, can we just simply have the plane warp to the southern boundary and still heading on in a northerly direction? This would in reality make the 40 by 40 map an entire self contained world. It would also allow for the bombers to climb out at realistic rates of climb.Condor out ------------------

It could certainly be done (we actually do that for the moving 3D clouds).I'm personally not in favor of it due to the fact that it could be used as a tactic to get away from attacking fighters. You would just disappear from range and they wouldn't know how to handle it without some ugly hacking. IP: Logged |

How about this...... Would it be possible to have a small button in the chat room that would re-name your aircraft folder? Then if you click it again, it will restore the aircraft folder. Lastnight we were getting alot of missmatches and people would haveto exit and rename the folder. It would just be kinda handy to have it done without exiting.------------------ Cheers! Actually MH, that could in a way add realism: Running away is a tactic, and the edge of the map could symbolize an enemy to friendly(safe) airspace transition. Of course you could still be followed across the boundaries, but once the plane has crossed out of your airspace you no longer have your ground stations tracking the Aircraft.IP: Logged |

I like that idea! Any other way to increase the effective map size looks to be either huge work or awfully kludgey - and besides, bombers really do need any help they can get!IP: Logged |

I think this would only been good if it were enabled via a variable property of the map. I dont think it would work well for the current maps that try to emulate historic theatres. However, for random maps built specifically for dogfighting, that only have rolling hills and no significant landmarks i think it would be good. Otherwise you would have a flight of bombers trying to sneak their way to target by flying from the other side of the map, which would kill the fun IMO.IP: Logged |

Well, in real life, if I were flying a bomber I'd do all I could to sneak to the target. In real life, there are no maps that show you which way a bomber is headed, and its exact location. In real life, they had to rely on ground reports early on, then later had radar, but it wasnt perfect. It's always a matter of adjusting tactics to counter the enemies tactics anyway. If the mission says, defend site A, then you fly to defend site, YOU don't look on the map and say, hey look there are bombers taking off in England, I think I'll fly over there and get the jump on them before they get here. In my mind, enemy planes should not be shown on the map or on radar until they get X distance from either ground or air unit on your side.(X being determined by either radar locations or ground observation) IP: Logged |

Archy if your looking for realism, turn off 'show enemy aircraft on map'then you cant see them coming in general they knew most bombers inbound to germany would be coming from the west or north in real life anglo-american bombers didnt bomb berlin by first flying over stalingrad the reason the defenders are so aggressive in sdoe is that fw190's and bf109's can fly from their bases to england and attack bombers without having to worry about fuel once some bigger maps roll around that wont happen as much IP: Logged |

Mike, Since it is technically possible to allow planes to cross map boundaries, consider this my official wish to add this ability to the SDOE wish list. I feel most pilots would adjust very quickly to any changes in strategy this would cause. Also, most of us back in the days of the game "asteroids" did not have any problem with the ship going off of one edge of the screen and showing up on the other edge. Thanks for at least considering it Mike. Take care, Condor out ------------------

Archy,Turning off show enemy aircraft on map only makes it tougher for you. Unless everyone does it with you (kind of like turning off your hud). The beta 1.5.1 allows this option to be selected in the multiplayer setup screen. This will change the way online fights are conducted. And will make those 40 x 40 maps seem a lot bigger. Some of those bomber jockeys are already pretty creative at getting around defenders. But now they won't know where you are and vice versa. I wouldn't want the rollover map option for the shipped terrains - Maybe it could be featureless flat land / sea for miles, or just empty sky - fly off the end of the world scenario. If you've ever loaded a mission without a terrain you'll know what I mean - where'd the world go??. Good luck getting back if you go off the map though. The infinite winds tend to break up dogfights that have wondered off-course which is sometimes a problem.

I think that this would be a real downer for realism buffs so if it is implemented it would be best left as an option for online play.IP: Logged |
