I don't have the full install of SDOE on my machine so perhaps someone has tried this idea already. Is it possible to duplicate aircraft in the media folder? For instance copy the FW190 to a FW190_A FW190_B etc. In each of these aircraft folders you would have a seperate skin for the respective aircraft. When you start the game then you would have seperate skins for the *_A, *_B, etc aircraft. This concept should then work for the online since you simply duplicate folders as needed. Has anyone tried this yet or is there a limit on the number of aircraft in the media directory? IP: Logged |

Yes, this can be done and it will work fine - but it makes quite a mess of the aircraft folder and mission editor with all those planes in there Still, would two panes be so bad? ------------------ -Sv =FC= WWI in SDOE! IP: Logged |

Spanky here... The other thing to remeber is the texture cache it is already quite full and you will run out very quickly if you have 2 or 3 versions of each plane IP: Logged |

Theres really no RIGHT way to do this. Theres many way to do it, but all have there down sides. I think we should work to have crewed bombers before we try anything else.. Raz

this was tried before by twin hit. It never caught on because of the complexity and the mess of it all. Plus you can only have 1 type of plane in a squad so you would be back to square 1 unless each plane was it's own squad, in which case the missions could get all screwy. Good thinking though.I agree with raz, the multi positioned bombers should be first as it would bring ALOT to this game. After this should be the AI, it needs toughing up, then the mission editor, then the skins.........then other stuff like a sun or moon... maybe even rain/snow. ------------------ Cheers! ...Jaguar is right...and it's even more complex! To copy the plane and rename the folder to P51_A wouldn't be enough! You have to change the texture path in the sm file to point to the new folder! Just copying the sm file and put it into another folder will end up with the same "standard" skin! Problem 2: if someone change the plane's fm, you have to change the sm file of your A, B, C types each time we change the fm. A lot of work...to have diffrent skins.... And if you would like the idea, that all other online players could see your skin in the netgame...all others would have to download your skin before action....too complex! Sorry, I had to destroy your plans... Have a nice day! Lector

Guys, I don't mean to piss on your fireworks as regards bomber positions and weather etc, but if we are still awaiting the online damage-modelling patch after nearly one year what chance of those other features within the next decade?! Give it up. B17-2 is nearly with us and has all the features you desire. There's no garauntee it'll be a perfect game right out of the box, but does anyone think it'll be as big a disaster as SDoE was? B17-2 is being published by Microprose and they have never, to my knowledge, been down in the gutter with activision; we can expect that they will fully support their baby with quality patches and up-grades. Spanky here.... Yeah seems a little hard to pull off right now and I do think that multiple position bombers should come first.I would love to see SDOE get multiple position bombers before B17 2 came out. That would be somthing they couldn't brag about hehee. But we could at some point try for at least personal Nose art and Plane numbers. That wouldn't take too long to send to the other players and they could be saved like the missions are know so for all the popular players it wouldn't be sending all the time. MH please tell me that opensource thing is still going to happen this can't be that hard to add to the game.

Am I alone or am I the only one who doesn't want to see on-line skins. It will take time to downloading the textures and the hard-drive space that will be taken up for all the variants of the different aircraft is going to be huge. Additionally most skins are aesthetically fine but frankly I don't want to fly against some of the garish, historically inaccurate and just plan ugly skins that I have seen.I think a far better idea would be to create an code lettering system similar to the numbering system used in Mig Alley i.e. (letters for allied aircraft numbers for German). Individual aircraft are assigned a number/letter and this is superimposed onto a blank skin template. It seems a far simpler and more efficient solution. ------------------ Yardstick painted this

Hi Yardy! You'd still need a seperate tex file for each a/c, regardless of how little was added to the template. If each fighter averages around 250k one isn't talking a lot of HD space for all us jockeys to have our own skin. Also, if the coding was done by MH it wouldn't need to be any more difficult for SDoE than it is for Red Baron...they've had individual skins for years. Have a good one tomorrow night mate!
