Hi Rattler,I have pretty much the same taste in sims as you do. I only fly online. Well, maybe one or two missions a month with my EAW offline campaign
SDOE is the best online boxed sim at the moment. It has some bugs - lack of gun damage and crashes to desktop before game launch being the worst. Those are said to be fixed in a patch, scheduled to be released around new year's.
For squadron play SDOE is absolutely marvelous. You can design just the kind of missions you want, and you can paint your own planes, make your own squad within the game etc.
You can build your own planes, as you may have noticed. This demands some skill and a lot of patience, but we've got a Zero, 109G and E, a Huey (!), and a bunch more already. More will be available as soon as the plane building contest is finished!
Graphics are above average, I like the look of this sim. And not to mention the clouds! The best there is. AH clouds - no contest, SDOE wins hands down!
I really recommend you give SDOE a shot. I heard you can get the game for about $20 nowadays! I paid about $60 for my copy, one of the best invested sixty smackers ever!
Last but not least: you can't find a community like this anywhere!
Cya in AH, and hopefully soon in the skies of SDOE!

Oh yeah, I have a P2-300, 128MB, Voodoo3 3000. I get around 25fps in most approx. 10 player missions with clouds. If I'm the host and there's lots of AI planes, then sometimes under 20 fps. If I zoom in a bit, it helps a lot. With "gunsight zoom" I get over 50fps. All in all, gameplay is very smooth.
