OK ...

As I've done this before, I'll do again for the benefit of the "newbies"

"Not all joystick are created equal" Those you you who have MS-Joysticks know how sensitive FS is with'm. Problem is related to "range of throw" ..i.e. The distance from center to full delfection.

A J-stick with a long throw (like CH joysticks) has a longer range of input which in-turn gives greater "fine" control over your input. MS-Joystick and their like have a shorter distance to convey that input. Which tends to make then more "sensitive".

Both FS and Spyders great utility have sliders to adjust your J-stick input ... problem is for some J-sticks, they still don't reduce it enough. This is where one has to "text-edit" their Sdemons.ini file.

(Forgive me for being so vauge, as I'm at work right now and don't have the file in front of me) ... There-in you'll find the four lines that dictate your joystick sensitivity.

"Trial and error" is what you'll have to do to find "YOUR" correct settings ... Open up the "take-off" training mission for the most sensitive plane (For me it was the 51) ... get behind the aircraft and move you joystick around ... watch the control surfaces ... if say your ailerons go to their maximum range-of-motion before your J-stick has ... you'll have to bump the sensitivity down further ... do the same with all the control surfaces (rudder, ailerons, elevator) .. Open your Sdemons.ini with something like notpad ... and reduce the coresponding lines.

You should be striving for as close to a 1 -to- 1 ratio as possible ...

If everyone endevors to calibrate their joystick as such ... the planes you fly will be the same ones us "FM'ers" worked so hard to make!

Also some joysticks offer a sensitivity curve. You can make the stick less sensitive in the center area - this way you get an easy to handle joystick but still full deflection - this helps give you more fine control near nutral control positions, good for high speed maneuvering!

The Logitech sensitiveity setting is autonaticly set to do this - it shows the curve on the screen - mine is set to ultra-sensitive and it made a world of difference!

CTFJ also allows the sensitivity to be
increased as the stick is deflected further.

This all makes perfect sense, a compelling
reason to buy CH sticks. As a user of
a trusty old CH flightstick Pro, I've always
wondered what the hell those whiners who claimed the planes spun as soon as they touched the stick were banging on about

Spanky here...

I totally get what you guys are saying about getting 1:1 throw vs control suface movment

and mine IS set that way some of the planes still seem twitchy

and i have a stick that i WOULDN'T call short throw.

I'm going to play around with profiler and see if i can adjust more on my stick like that curve thing

thanks for the heads up SV!

great post Zur

I've got one of those evil MS joysticks and I'm able to fly the p51 ok with some practice and an eye on the speed guage. The big thing missing is stick forces.. when a spitfire takes 60lbs of stick force to spin at 300mph I'm stumped how you can simulate this on a PC joystick. I tried FFB sticks and was dissapointed. Closest thing is the Thrustmaster Pro FCS and X-Fighter which were discontinued. They required about 8 lbs of force to get to the extents. You get a sore arm but a good workout hehe.
