I thought that TNT was the best thing since sliced bread and I would pick one up cheap now that they are a year or two old. Now you guys are talking like they are not so great what gives.

Bomber-

What card did you buy? I have the 16MB Velocity 4400 TNT card by STB. I get good FPS (40-60s) in SDOE even with a lot of planes. The only things that slows it down considerably is a lot of action with the clouds on.

You know its not the latest technology but it must be better than what you have since you bought it. How much did it run you? $80 or so?

Ain't keep'n up with the Jones' a bitch?!?

I didn't notice a huge speed difference in SDOE going from TNT to TNT2 Ultra, the image quality is better though. If you're just getting it for SDOE it's prolly not worth it but for other games it is. I did notice a speed increase recently with the 3.53 driver update, but it makes the clouds flicker now. I'm going back to the older drivers.

What card are you using now? If you're running voodoo 2 or banshee dont bother upgrading.

Its not so much the card, its the API - D3D is slow for SDOE, Glide (openGL?) is much faster - so Voodoo cards give you much better frame rate. I still get twice the FPS with my VoodooII card over my TNT2 card.

Other games are a different story...

I think the limiting factor in SDOE's frame rate is your processor. The more planes you have means that much more math that your CPU has to do. SDOE is doing *a lot* of math every frame. I'd be surprised if a Voodoo2 or TNT didn't give you about as good a framerate as you'll get until you upgrade to a PIII-800 or the like.
Of course if someone knows differently, please correct me .

Spanky here..

I love my banshee it kicks ass. and yes i think SDOE is a cpu dependent game i hit 60s regularly but not consititly

I hope a new cpu will help that. I don't think a new vid card no matter how fast will help that.

Actually,
I have been running a Creative Voodoo2 12 meg card. I run a Celeron 433 64 meg of ram. With lots of planes (bombers and lots of ground objects) I will get around 12 FPS in 800x600. I just adde0d a second Voodoo2 card and this is up around the mid 20's or so. Video cards can have a large impact as to how this game runs. Having a better processor for video will help take some of the load off the cpu for the insane math process.
Glide is a Mini-GL port. It is designed for 3DFX card hardware and makes calls that "Standard" Open GL hardware won't recognize. OGL is faster by a long shot then D3D... for now. Microsoft is really working to catch up to the speed that OGL is prducing... but we will see. D3D is nice in that pretty much any 3D accelerator will work with it.
TNT Vs. TNT2.... well, for Open GL apps the TNT2 is superior... assuming that you are using a 2x AGP motherboard. Just like the GeForce cards are vastly superior if you use a 4x motherboard. Remember that what you have installed your card into makes a huge difference as to how it reacts to games. If you stuff a GeForce card into a K6-2 motherboard with 1x AGP.. your bottleneck is the motherboard and CPU.. not the video. If you have an Intel P3-500 with 4x and a TNT... the bottleneck is the video.
There are some other considerations of course, but these are the basics.....

Mirthain

yeah i just ment in my set up a new vid card won't help much

i run a p2 266 and get 60s and have even hit 100

but its not consistant and i think a new cpu will help that

even tail with (i think) a p2 or p3 450 says a new vid card didn't help much

With my new drivers on a TNT2U/Cel450 system fog at 9 max detail I get about 70fps with not alot going on, flying in a B17 with another B17 nearby and my cockpit zoomed all the way out I get 30-35 fps, where I got about 20-25 before. You do get a speedup but not as much as I would have hoped. The new 3.53 drivers account for about half the speed increase it seems like. Benchmarks I see indicate the TNT2U needs a fast CPU to keep it busy. One of these days that Athlon 750 will be mine muahahaha.

Yep tail i'm athlon all the way, I'm bugging the Girl to get me a 500 with board and 128 megs. hehe

I don't really care if i see a big FPS increase in SDOE i just hope to be able to run online, with fog out a bit more (at 5 now) with the details and object sliders at max, at 800x600 and a whole wack of planes around me and keep my FPS over say 25

that would make me happy I mean 25fps as the lowest it hits.

would you guys say that is asking too much?

Folks, please be shure to check out the site:
http://www.tweak3d.com/

I went there today, followed their recommendations for TNT cards and CPU/mainboard tweaking and am getting consistently higher FPS across the board.

I also set min/max Swap file and vcache settings and defragged which always helps but the gfx settings seem to have made the major difference.

Yeah I also set my swap file max and min.
mine is at 150. I used cacheman to set my cache settings but I don't think it does anything for vcache. I'll have to check out that stuff.

That is a great link. Been there many times.
