Interesting the Thunder Over Europe shut down their forum and took most of their info off their website.Does that mean another competitor is on the skids? TalonSoft has releases a sequel to the Battle of Britian strategy game, '12 O Clock High.' ------------------ Kopper Fortunae Nihil (Nothing to Chance) OPPs Making SDOE a Dangerous place. It says on the site:As you may have noticed, our Flight Combat site is currently "under construction". For the next few weeks, we're going to be revamping the content and look of our site to reflect some exciting design changes and new features that will be going into Flight Combat! Soon after the first of the New Year, Electronic Arts and Looking Glass Studios will be announcing those changes to the entire sim community, and you'll be able to get the details about them right here. ... To those of you who have participated in discussion with us on our message board forum, we thank you for your input and insights, as they have truly helped us shape and mold the game into what we believe will be the best combat flight sim in the year 2000!. Both this site and the forum will be up again right after the first of the year with tons of new stuff!! Best Wishes and Happy Holidays to you! ------------------ ________________________ TS Aircombat

AH HA! Trying to stir up trouble again I see, Kopper... Can't you wait for 3 weeks?I was pissed off when they closed the forum though. Had some more questions for them yet. Guess I'll have to wait till next year, and maybe I can trick them into letting me beta test, hehehe. IP: Logged |

I sent a note asking to be a beta tester. Con replied, he didn't say yes or no! It does concern me that they cut the forum off. Why would they do that? ------------------ Kopper Fortunae Nihil (Nothing to Chance) OPPs Making SDOE a Dangerous place. One plane at a time. IP: Logged |

Dunno, but the messageboard they were using was pretty crappy, it stopped taking new posts once, and after that the older posts were all messed up. I figure they probably just took down the whole site to make it simpler for them. That way they don't have to worry about checking it until it's back up... I do think it's a bad move though, since it makes people worried about it. IP: Logged |

My theory is, things are not well in TOE land. A first they were saying its gamers write a game for gamers. So they wanted to keep in contact with the community. For the past few months they haven't been doing it and now they cut it off entirely. There is definately something amiss. No matter what the PR response is about why they shut it down. Seems everyone is jumping off the WWII sim bandwagon and fast. ------------------ Kopper Fortunae Nihil (Nothing to Chance) OPPs Making SDOE a Dangerous place. One plane at a time. IP: Logged |

Spanky here If I remember correctly this was the one being done by looking glass right? Also these are the people who did flight unlimited 1,2,3? I had high hopes for this sim since most people seem to like there civ sims. I have 2 worrys about the game 1. I thought i heard about people having low frame rates in FU3. And if so can you imagine the FPS (if they are using the same underlying engine) when you have a wack of planes(how many planes are on the screen in a siv sim?) and gun effects, explosions, droping bombs, plane parts, smoke trails, fire and all the good stuff in a ww2 flight sim? 2. Maybe they underestimated how hard it is to make a good ww2 flight sim after just makeing civ sims? reasons being more planes more sounds more reshearch historical correctness more graphical effects more extensive interface missions mulitplayer and a smaller market and oh yeah can't forget the crazy demanding players hehe I hope this game doesn't get canned but it does seem like alot of people are going more towards
"lets clone the most popular game out there and make some money" btw what do you think MH? I know less compatition is a good thing but in someways it can be helpfull. Like pushing you to do more elaborate and exciteing things after they have been introduced by another game. And keeping the intrest in flight sims alive. IP: Logged |

I haven't heard anything specific about TOE in a while.I have mixed feelings about the possibility of them giving up the ghost. I wouldn't mind it from the competition angle, but it would be sad to see another game bite the dust. This is not an easy market to make money in and it gets harder every day if you don't have several million in the bank, gathering dust. IP: Logged |

I think a big part of the low framerates in FU3 is caused by the fact it's two sims in one: A flight sim, and a weather sim. Plus the FU2/3 graphics engine seems to be slowish even in the best situation. I don't think FC:TOE is using exactly the same graphics engine, or maybe (crazy theory time) they are taking extra time to optimise or totally rework it for FC:TOE? IP: Logged |

Time for some pure speculation on my part (or crazy theory if you will)...Looking Glass recently signed up with EA in a deal to publish their future titles, starting with System Shock 2 and Flight Unlimited 3, and of course FC:TOE. Flight Unlimited 3 - Is it selling well? There has been alot of commotion about poor frame rates even on high-end hardware, plus the immediate competition from Fly! and Flight Simulator 2000 may be making for poorer sales than expected by EA's bean counters. In one of the posts Con H. made before the FC:TOE website was pulled, he said that EA came to see how they were going and they were suitably impressed and suggested ways they could improve the game... And then the game was delayed from it's original Christmas release date(Con H. seemed to be hinting it would be ready by then), to some time unspecified, Q1 2000 might have been mentioned (I can't remember now) Maybe EA has lost faith in the idea of another flight sim from LG and has ordered some big changes to FC:TOE, like improving the graphics engine to get better framerates, or some other major design change(s)??? PS: Sound like a good "conspiracy theory" to you Kopper? IP: Logged |

Juzz,Sounds like a great theory. I haven't been wrong yet in any of my predictions and I don't make many predictions. To add some more fuel to the fires of speculation, some e-maily stuff: quote: Don't Worry! When you hear and see our announcement in January (hopefully early January), you'll understand (why we're doing what we're doing). All good stuff.Mike Malizola VP, Marketing and Licensing Looking Glass Studios -----Original Message----- From: Censored :P Sent: Thursday, December 09, 1999 11:41 PM To: marketing Subject: FC:TOE??? To someone who will give me an answer (please? ) What's going on with this (great looking) game? Recently the programmer's participation on the www.fctoe.com website's forum dropped right off, then the site was pulled down altogether - at first it was said an update would come after thanksgiving, but now it says after new years...? This behavior is causing some concern about the state of the game in the online flight sim community, especially considering the recent actions by other companies like Sierra and Hasbro/Microprose.
If he's wrong, I'll fix his little red cart! And good too! crazy ubb formatting...[This message has been edited by juzz (edited 12-10-1999).] IP: Logged |
