Hi all, it's been awhile for me between posts, and play, but I'm still around and kicking and I had an idea I wanted to share with you all. I would like to see what you guys think of this...

A CONTEST for the Best New Plane made in SDOE!

This would be any new plane developed from now until Feb 1st 2000. Planes still in development would be included. That's a deadline I thought might be achievable by the guys that do the great work we have seen lately.

The prize....well, not a million dollars (Regis Philbin I ain't), but how about $100.00! Thats would buy a decent dinner out, and maybe a drink or two anyway.

My thoughts are that we could send word to all the onsite combat sim sites. i.e. CombatSim, SimHQ, DogFighter, etc. about this contest. They print the story, and... it just might spark more pub for SDOE, showcase the wonderful things many of you guys do, and get some new talent to this community.

Look, I have no talent in this area. I wish I did. I have taken alot from this community and never had a chance to give back. This could be my way, however meager to give a little something back.

I figure the guys (and girls) from the site could vote on the results. Everyone would be a winner. No losers! How often does that happen.

Well, I can't wait to hear what you think. Any input would be appreciated.

PR

p.s. Oh, just to be honest...I also thought Feb 1st because my vacation is that week. Hey, I wanna fly these planes too!

hi man it sounds great but where does the $100 come from?

a contest of some sort sounds great but i'm not sure about the money part

maybe MH could use the plane in sdop and give the maker a free copy?

i know that sounds like it would limit the planes to pacific stuff

but i was wondering should MH even limit the next fighter squad game to the pacific?

this does however really motivate me to keep working on my plane

Tell you what...

Inertia will match your $100 and bring the total to $200 for the best plane made by Feb 1st. I haven't had a chance to talk to Ron (Inertia's Biz guy) about it yet, but if it poses any problems, I'll supply my own personal money.

What do you think about the idea of giving the judges 10 days to get the votes in, with the award being given out on Feb 10th?

kick ass MH that sounds great

umm
about sdop are you going to limit to a pac sim or would you maybe just try to make it a ww2 sim?

maybe expansion packs every couple months for like 20 or so US ?

you could start it off as pac and add more missions and planes maps sounds and stuff?

i'm just thinking that cause why should you limit it?

also you ever get the chance to fly online? i would love to fly with ya or try to take you down

The first $100.00 would come from me. Like I said, it's my small way to give back a little to a great community and sim.

Michael, your kicking in a $100.00! Super!

I'm glad to see we are generating excitement already. That was my hope.

Keep the ideas and suggestions coming guys!

I like the idea of the 10 days for the judges Michael. This will be loads of fun!

Lets get this completely figured out in the next few days and get the guidelines forwarded to all the online Sim sites, and the paticipants of course.

I like the way this is shaping up!

Raider,

Thanks alot. That's very generous, but I will decline. You need your money buddy if your unemployed.

See, I have a need to do this, and believe me when I tell you all....I will get a hundred times more back in seeing the enthusiasm and fun, not to metion the Aircraft (is that better Jag? ) this small contribution from myself will bring to the community.

If anyone feels they want to contribute..great! Just add it to the "SDOE Best Aircraft of the Millineum Contest" fund.

What do you think Michael? any more thoughts on how best to do this?

I'm already excited! Thanks guys.

Spanky: At the moment, the designs for Project "X" (the pacific sim) call for a Pacific-like WWII flight sim. Considering that it's on hold while we work on the "other" game (Project "Y"), all sorts of changes could be made.

Bear in mind that it won't be called SDOP since the Fighter Squadron, Screamin' ... name is owned by Activision.

PR: Cool. Let's coordinate by email, and continue taking suggestions here.

Why not include planes already done. Doing a plane takes a great deal of time and effort. Perhaps some gave it their one best shot.

How do you just a best plane? How compare a bomber against a fighter?

Would this be the model and skin only or damage, FM, dash board, etc? Are team efforts allowed?

Spanky,

Yeah buddy, I have seen your enthusiasim for SDOE grow. You really have done a great job of carrying the SDOE torch.

I encourage you to beat the drum loudly as you visit all the sites. Just do it with respect and class for the members of the site. That style seems to cast the best light on this sim and community. I know you will though. Your excitement is contageous.

I am wondering how the best way to structure the voting? Maybe a poll like many of the those done recently? Or do we want only a few to judge? Personally I would like the voting open to the entire community, but I'm open to suggestions.

Should all planes...er...aircraft be considered, or should we limit it to WWII?

Once we get the guidelines straight....Katie bar the door!!!!!

I think you edited that way too quickly; a Pacific Based WWI flight sim would certainly be an interesting niche

It would make it real easy too, no aircraft to worry about (since the wars happening over in Europe) but you would have to get the swing of the hammock strung between coconut trees right, or else you'll get all the beach bum’s complaining about the realism!

Boy I surely don't want this to turn into any kind of negative thing. I want everyone to have fun with this.

I thought a new plane because that would encourage people who may not have taken the plunge into design to do so. Maybe with the help of others. Heck several could pool there talents! Make it fun!

This does not in anyway diminish the work of those done before now. I love those planes, but this is about the New planes.

How do you judge? Gosh thats always subjective. Does everyone agree on Best Picture every year? No. Just have fun with this!
We will all decide. And in the process get hopefully several new planes.

Planes made, or still in development from this day forward. That would not include planes which have already been released for general consumption.

We have to have some guidelines guys. This seems fair to me. After all, I don't think anyone developed any of the previous planes expecting this. I'm not trying to pull anything, I promise.

Can we keep this fun?

Let's focus on the prize and the pretty easy guidelines and have fun.

Thank you PR. I hope to be employed again soon. I want to suggest that current Aircraft be admitted. I too would like to see some new planes but it would not be fair if the Huey, Zero, Goth, Camel, all the new Spits and 109s etc. could not enter. This is just a suggestion. You should make the rules as you see fit.

Since we now have $200, how about $100 for best new aircraft (after today) as PR originally proposed and then $100 for the best aircraft overall including the one's already released?

That way a new plane (aircraft) could get the whole $200 if it won both categories, while giving us a chance to reward the hard work that went into a previous release. Let's face it the previous releases and documentation are what make this contest possible.

Actually Jerry...I think that's a darn good idea. However since MH is now a player I think he would have a say also.

Above all I hope this can be a fun contest that brings out the best in the SDOE community and allows a gem of a game to shine bright enough for all prop sim pilots to see.

I can't wait to see what is developed!

This is going to be a great couple of months!

Great idea Jerry.

How do these rules strike everyone?

Two categories:
1) Best New Plane (since Dec 1, 1999)
2) Best Overall Plane.

1) Planes must be completed and ready for submission by midnight January 31, 2000 (Central time zone, -6GMT)

2) In order to qualify, the applicant must email their submission form (to be made available later) along with a link to their plane zip file.

3) The plane zips should contain all assets needed to fly the plane (unless the plane uses assets which shipped with Fighter Squadron) and should include a takeoff training mission for the plane.

4) The plane may be derived from the planes which shipped with Fighter Squadron but should not be derived from another individuals work unless you will be sharing the prize with the original author.

5) Group submissions are acceptable (and encouraged) although there should be one person in the group who is designated to receive the prize money. He (or she) is then responsible for making sure the rest of the group receives their share of the prize.

6) Planes available before Dec 1, 1999 are not eligable for the Best New Plane prize. This includes new (post Dec 1, 1999) modifications of planes which were released prior to Dec 1, 1999.

How does this sound as a first pass to the rules?

I have a couple suggestions. First, I think that somebody should compile a list of the user creations which are NOT eligible for the New Plane prize now. This will help clear the air now, and make sure everybody is on the same page.
Secondly, I think that the people putting up the money should decide if everybody votes on planes, or just themselves. Maybe they don't want the responsibility of picking one plane over another, or maybe they do. Either way, their money means it's their game.

just my 2 cents.

that sounds good to me MH. The people who are putting up the money should choose who votes, and obiously if you are in the contest you can't vote...... or we could have it so the people in the contest DO vote, but they can't pick their own. This would be a better way to judge how much work went into a project, as who would know better than those who are most familiar in the field.

And we should probably set a registering date...... how about a week friday? the 17th? people would register what aircraft (thanks PR ) they wish to create, the number/names of people in the group and what date the project was started on.

Thats all I could think of right now.... I THINK we covered everything.... It's just too bad that everyone who participates won't get something...... maybe t-shirts or something? hehehe.

I have a thought concerning a consolation prize for each participant. It wouldn't be much mind you, but it would at least give them a momento of the contest.

Once I put some things together, and see the amount of entries I will announce what these smaller prizes will be.

I always have enjoyed giving rather than getting, and so I too am adding $100 dollars to the pot to bring it up to $300! No kidding.

SDOE and OP are such a major part of my life that I won't be leaving anytime soon. Being away from it all for a while has made me realize how much I really do love it, and this community. I'm very glad that it's still going strong, if not even stronger now. This is my .02 (er, $100) to help out and spark more enthusiasm.

Whatever I create however is free. I'm not in the contest, so no to that one post I saw tonight saying I'm back into SDOE for the money. I'm really not. I enjoy this for the sake of what it gives me. A feeling of awe and accomplishment when I/we can create new planes and actually get to fly them in a very realistic environment! My hats off to Private Roger and Michael Harrison for doing this. Come to think of it we should have done it long ago Just think, by the time Feb 10 rolls around we'll have a handful of new planes!

So my $100 is in the pot. Where do I send it? Email me pthawk@castles.com

Great news Pete!

This should really add some incentive for the guys to get those planes going, that they have up until now just been thinking about. Or the guys who have that plane started, but put it away to finish later. Now's the time guys! Give it your best shot! Were talking about some serious coin here.

Once we have the application for the contest finalized I plan on sending a letter to all the online Sim magazines about the Contest. We may start to see quite a few new faces soon.

Any ideas on an Official name for the contest?

OK PR, now that Pete is in, I want in to! Let me know where to send my $100.

I really built my SE5a in order to create the documentation on my site - for the ultimate hope of getting more people to take the plunge into OpenPlane (and maybe even WWI heheh) - and to my surprise, it seemed to work!

This contest is a great idea PR! The timing seems perfect...

I will not be entering a plane, I'm too busy writing docs heheh - but for anyone getting up to speed with basic OpenPlane stuff: please let me know areas that cause you trouble and I will try to address this on my site as best I can.

Now when do we have a contest for the best OpenPlane tool?

Mad Dog barkin' - HOLAY!! $400?! I'm gonna make me a plane!! We think that the money should be devided somehow. Maybe $100 for first place in each division, and $50 for second and third in each division. And maybe the rights to be a beta tester and boxed version owner of Project X and Y.

I think that I would put the odds on that the plane that wins best overall will be a new plane, so having two divisions seems a bit odd. Not to put down any of the planes that have been made to date, but with all the work that is going to go into these new planes do you think that the winner will be the 109, Zero, or even the coveted Spit? Not to mention that there is currently alot of money on the line. We think it should be lumped into one giant contest with the winner being the man or team of men who come up with the best damn SDOE plane ever made!!

Holy Batshit Fatman!

This is turning into one serious contest!

Ok guys, I think we (PR and I) will need some time to continue taking suggestions and setting the boundaries of the contest.

I'll be sending out an email to various web sites and hardware companies today asking for contest support (but no announcements yet)with anything they can provide.

Inertia can't supply cash (for legal reasons), so I'm looking at hardware we can purchase and offer as a prize, but personally I'll still put up $100.

Inertia will be putting up hardware and providing site space but won't be directly involved in any other capacity.

I'm going to be handling my part as fellow user.

I think we'll probably have to move the date to accomodate the time it takes to make a plane (but maybe not, what do you plane builders think?) and get all the prizes organized.
