fixing everything up other than for ourselves.Suppose we get this thing fixed to the point it's the best damn sim going. (This we can do.) What would be the point of it. Because if we go out and hype the fixes then everyone buys SDOE and we have lined Activision's pockets. Just where have then been since the release of the CD patch fix? ------------------ Kopper Fortunae Nihil (Nothing to Chance) OPPs Making SDOE a Dangerous place. One plane at a time. IP: Logged |

i see what your saying Kopper and u have a really good point but besides making a warez version and giving it to anyone who wants to play it hehe theres not much we can do about iti do know why we want to make it the best damm sim going PEOPLE, more players to play with online I don't know about u guys but i don't like that theres only probly around 30 online peak at the moment and its only in the evening What about those who work at night? or don't work People have to comform to certain hours to play, and that sucks! another thing is the more people we attract the more people will be playing with openplane and making stuff and hopefully we will attract more people like Spyder, Bryan R, Hippie and they can help build on to SDOE through programing It sucks that activision gets money for doing nothing, but isn't that what all publishers are like?
anyways MORE people thats why we do it
and hehe one more to rub peoples face in it when they realize this is the BEST SIM out there lol

So what if we line Activision's pockets?! Are we any worse off for it? Are we having less fun with the game when we fix stuff?! I don't think so. When someone makes the FM's better, they basicly do it for themselves, and then release it to the rest of us and we apreciate it. Alot. I think that when SDOE is recognized as one of the best sims out there, we will all feel very satisfied that we have stuck it out, and got to see the evolution of a fine piece of software. Kopper. that's why I outlined my thoughts on what should happen with the FS code once some of you guys get hold of it.Think outside the box. If you distribute a program which doesn't contain any of the Activision assets, why would they need to be involved? Bryan is working on terrain... Others have been making planes and other objects. Still others have been making missions. So you might have to help line Activision's pocket while the networking, UI elements and missions editor are replaced. Think about this... Downloadable demos have been getting bigger and bigger over the last year. It's to the point where 50MB isn't such a big deal these days and as adsl and cable become more popular, larger downloads will become less and less a concern. IP: Logged |

First, I don't think that this simulation is going to be fixed to the point of being the "best damn simulation" out there. No disrespect to anyone involved in working the FMs, new aircraft, skins, or anything like that. IMHO, I don't think it is going to happen because technology will progress beyond the code in this simulation soon. I love this simulation but just as computer power increases with time - so do software capabilities. And to change that you are going to need much more of the total simulation code - and I don't think Activision cares to have you guys getting into the simulation code that they feel is a failed cause. Really, what I think is going on is that the folks working deep in to OpenPlane code of this simulation are laying a great foundation for the next one that comes along (assuming there is a Pacific Theater coming out of Interia). That is where all the work going on here is going to shine.

I would think that you could do some things with this sim that would require a high end machine to run at a good Frame rate.------------------ silas

Notice I said the "best simulation out there", I said nothing about best WWII sim. As I said before, I really like this sim and I think it is very good but for the best WWII sim, I would say it would have to be a Frankenstein combination with these ingredients:The database size of EAW. The massive amounts of aircraft as in EAW. The cockpit detail as in WWII Fighters. The terrain elevation changes as in SDOE. The flying fun of SDOE. The communication of at least F-15 or Falcon 4. The mission editor of at least F/A-18 Korea with some improvements. Purely objective - the FMs on some aircraft still need work - not tweaking. There are some bugs that have been introduced by tweaking the FMs like the landing gear bug in the P-38 that needs resolving. I'm not saying that some of these things can't be done certainly many of the new or modified aircraft are better than the orgional ones - but I think more than likely it will happen quicker by people whose livelyhood depends on writing and publishing simulations - those same people who have a more detailed understanding of the inner workings of the program and how things interact. I take nothing away from SDOE - even when it first came out w/o the first patch. It took a few hours of playing but it grew on you (or at least some of us). it is a great simulation - but I'm sure there will be better ones downstream - maybe even a Pacific Theater using SDOE engine and built on lessons learned and more capable hardware. I dont think the "lifetime of sims" is a valid argument, red baron 3d is a good example of what happens if users like the game enough to modify it to their satisfaction.I thought this(rb3d) sucked when it came out ?2 yrs ago,it gathered dust until I stumbled accross some mods recently which i tried and its great now with more mods on the way. With the exception of the campaigns(is anyone still working on a dynamic camp engine anymore??)rb3d does not compare with the graphics and flight modelling of this sim.Basically I dont see why people are trying to write this sim off purely on a "time from release basis".If projects are completed as planned I think this sim will have a great future.{PS Bryan any idea when your new large terrain will be available?}IP: Logged |

So, MH based on your comments about removing Activision code would that by chance be the 1st project of semi-open source? The true value in this sim is not SDOE or SDOP or SDOWWI. The gem is the Open Plane, which you still own the rights to, good thing! Putting more of the capabilities of the game into OP and just working on OP is what is going to make this softward have an indefinate shelf life. Witness we now have Choppers (yes Jag I admit it is a good thing), WWI fighters and more WWII fighters. Nothing stopping someone from doing jet fighters or space fighters etc! Now if we can package it in a campaign style similar to SWOTL (the bombing campaigns) or the idea behind Talonsoft's BofB what a concept. Right from high level strategic to you flying the plane! ------------------ Kopper Fortunae Nihil (Nothing to Chance) OPPs Making SDOE a Dangerous place. One plane at a time. IP: Logged |

DARN RIGHT IT'S A............. I mean It's nice to see you agree Kopper If you look at SWOTL, addons were only 1 plane. (just as a side note, some people payed something like 10 bucks for them! now compair those planes to the ones people are making in FS for free ). But we are not charging for it. And does it really matter if Craptivision is getting more money for it? I know I hate the idea of Craptivision getting more money, but there's nithing anyone can do about it, so just ignore it. Look at the benifits of doing this stuff.... 1. you won't haveto ever buy another sim 2. We'll have more people interested in this sim which means more people online. 3. Just knowing lots of poeple are using something you made feels really good! thats what keeps everyone going on these OP projects. ------------------ Cheers! Jaguar www.fshangar.com IP: Logged |

Another "Ultra Realistic" opinion from ZoyciteOpenPlane is great, all the possible things that can be done is great. People can and will work on what ever they want. While all this is good, SDOE isnt going to be finished ever, imho. What I do see is SDOE being the test bed for things to come. All this work, no matter how small will help in future development. So will SDOP be the best sim ever? Maybe. I hope so. And why, because of all the work being done now. As Kopper said, with all the projects going on, there isnt a real focus to fix SDOE, which is good and bad. Good because of the above paragraph and bad becuase it seems that people (hardcore simmers) have left. Its all a personal choice, but I'd hate to see SDOE/P end up with the rep of being a unfinished, modified to no end type of "toy". This is where I feel, the choice has to be made. If the above is true, then SDOE/P will have a hard time gaining respect of the flight sim public at large. A public that is largely made up of hardcore simmers and people who could care less of mods and development. So what the heck am I trying to say? Focus on SDOE as shipped. Then work on making the new models great planes. I'm not sure if this will ever get done, but we can hope. Perhaps, Kopper could organize a focussed group of volunteers to get this done. Dont get me wrong, the new stuff is great, and I do enjoy seeing all the new stuff. But the old stuff can made better Its tough, being stuck in the middle. Fix the old, make the new stuff, and Cant wait for SDOP Its a long road, but I'm sure great things will happen Its all a personal choice, and the above views are only my personal views. ------------------ Zoycite {GS} GUNSLINGERS visit The War Paint Factory IP: Logged | |
