Would it be possible to set up a reverse RATO that is triggered by the tailhook? For example, you are comming in for a deck landing...you drop your tailhook...when the tailhook strikes the deck it triggers the reverse RATO. Theoreticly slowing you down in a big hurry. BULLET IP: Logged |

For sure Bullet,But they usually donīt use that tech for landings, but take-off. I donīt think the īpuristsī will like that improvement. Cheers, K-A IP: Logged |

Actually, if you are using mace:'s planes, and I think jedi's as well-- the tailhooks are already set up to slow you down. Not sure how to explain it, but upon touchdown, they slow down pretty well IP: Logged |

I can't get the Jedi's Corsair tailhooks to work. They go straight up into the tail.IP: Logged |

There may actually be a way to do a "real" arresting system. Someone (sorry, I forget who now) rigged up a system where you could tow a P-51 with a B-17 using the obRopePts from a parachutist. Presumably the P-51 had all its physical properties intact, and could hit other objects, i.e. not just pass through. So it should be possible to "tow" a "bar" of some kind behind a plane, attached to, say, the wings by obRopePts. Then, you create a "hook" on the deck of the carrier, in the middle so your main gear won't hit it. When the bar you're towing hits the hook, your plane should stop. Theoretically Might have to add springs and whatnot to the hook to make sure the impact doesn't rip the hook out or rip your wings off. Wanted to experiment with this (I think I have the B-17 "tow plane" somewhere) but just haven't had the time lately. P.S. on the "Mace Hooks" on the Corsair, be sure you have the gear down before the tailhook. Not sure it deploys properly otherwise. One way to test it is to do the "Deck Takeoff" mission. While sitting on the deck, extend the tailhook. You should see the whole tail lift up off the deck. If that happens, the "hidden" drag hooks should all be working. ------------------ --jedi-- [This message has been edited by jedi (edited 12-13-2001).] IP: Logged |

Ah yes... The towplane experiment, I remember that! I believe it was, errr, me who came up with that. Only problem with towing a bar is that it could hit other things aswell. You could set it up where when you lower your hook, the bar detaches and begins to be towed, but them re-taking off would be a pain. IP: Logged |

I've been experimenting with different material on the deck to aid aircraft braking. Mud is the best but causes problems with aircraft sinking into it. Dirt is the deck material I've used in a new carrier HMS Illustrious, that also has an animated launch officer and a batman.cheers mace: IP: Logged | |
